I'm confused because isn't the whole yucatan penisula considered the mayan riveiera? We are going to the Grand Palladium Colonial and it's right outside of playa del carmen - haven't gone yet, but my travel agent says it's BEAUTIFUL with many excursions close by to see the mayan ruins :)
Playacar is so much fun! i love the small city and all the shopping and then going into the gated community where the hotels are makes me feel so safe!
I preferred the beach further away from Cancun and Playacar, so further down the Mayan Riveria.
we stayed in the riviera maya... at secrets marona beach and it was amazing!!!! its true it is a bit farther from some stuff but there is still alot to do. we only left our resort twice to go shopping in playa and once to go ziplining! :) other than that there was a live show every night (think fire and ice show/american idol/couples gameshow/ spanish dance show etc) and also a night club which we never made it to because we were always so tired haha!!! :)
There are pros and cons to both; the resorts along the RM tend to be bigger and more spread-out, with loads going on on-site; whereas the closer you are to a town, the less usually goes on at the resort, esp at night. We were at the Royal in Playa del Carmen (near Playacar) this year, and it got very quiet at night after the show; there was nowhere to go and have a nice drink.
Do remember that if you don't stay in town, it's still easy to go into town if you want to; taxis are easy to get, and not too expensive.
Also, research the resort carefully; the descriptions can be misleading, and something down as being 'in' Playacar in your travel agent might actually be a short cab-ride (likewise with hotels billed as being in Cancun or Playa del Carmen); so check out the resorts website and trip advisor before booking to get an exact location and make sure it's walkable.
thanks for all your replies we decided to go playa car, at the ocean maya royale complex. we liked the idea it was newly refurbished and adults only, now our next big ??? is who too book our excursions with?? we live in the uk so wasn;t sure if we were abe to book with any of the u.s sites.
do any of you bees jave any good reccomendations , we want to book our excursions prior to going, and was wondering if it is cheaper to do it with the hotel or to book them with private companies.
thanks x

hi bees, me and fh our currently in process of booking our honeymoon, we have chosen Mexico! we have been into our travel agents and they advised playacar was in between cancun and riviera maya in terms of liveliness and things to do?
just wanted some of your advice on what you think the difference is, we didn't want to go to cancun as it is too busy and we wanted somewhere quiet but then we also wouldn't mind a bit of liveliness as well!! hope this makes sense!
thanks
