Hello!! Below is a picture of our living room before and our living room after, I need advice! We got hard wood from lumber liquidators and honestly I think it's too dark :( But it is what it is, and it does look good, and i'm going to have to work with it.
We got a new area rug though, and I'm having trouble deciding if I like it or not. i feel like a solid color rug from pottery barn in a tan like color would look a lot better, though. Please give your thoughts! (sorry for the bad quality - taken with my camera phone)

And here's after with the hardwood, new paint and new area rug...

SO I just don't know if I like the area rug. Does anyone have ANY suggestions?!?! Thank you ladies so much!!!
I LOVE your rug. I think a plain rug wouldn't add near the visual interest to the room that you've got going right now. Plus the colors and pattern really brighten the room up even with the dark floors.
I love the area rug.. I also really like your dark hard wood floor. I dont usually like that teal colour. but honestly it looks great in that room all put together with the dark floor, light coloured couch and fun rug. nice room!
I like it a lot. I agree that the wood is too dark, but the rug does brighten up the area a lot.
I like it! I think the rug actually compliments the floor, furniture, and paint. You did a great job!!
P.S. Your doggies are cute!
I really like the rug. it really adds visual interest. Without some pattern, the room would just be a bunch of blocks of color.
Thank you!! We got the wood for a really good price and it's a very dark brown, and I wish it weren't as dark but unfortunately there is nothing that I can do...it's done and it is what it is :( I like them, but just wish they weren't so dark.
But thank you guys for your advice on the living room. I'm trying hard to like it but it's just HARD. I guess I just had my mind set on a solid color and then we found this, but I just am now confused as to what color pillows to get?! I am just not good at decorating!
I personally love dark wood floors. I think they look gorgeous especially with your wall color and couch. But sorry--not a fan of the rug. I like a more simple pattern and accentuate pattern with throw pillows. It's easier (and more economical) to change the look of your room with pillows rather than a rug.
@gvsusara: And that's exaclty what I was thinking. I thought a solid color rug would look better so that I could add more color with the throw pillows. I'm glad you like the dark wood floors though, makes me feel better! I just got the rug this afternoon and thought it's worth a shot - and can return it if I don't like it. But I figured I'd let it sit for just a little while to see if it grows on me.
@DL1818: Your doggies seem quite photogenic! In terms of pillows, I'd go for a combination..., sage/blue (?), chocolate, gold, AND an ivy leaf pillow with your colors (kinda like the links below).

Target has a bunch online! Good Luck!
@DL1818: I went through 3 rugs before I found "the one." LOL! I decided to jazz things up with pillows. It was a money saver and helped my DH from pulling out his hair :)
Why not pick up the rug and wall colors in pillows, but do slightly different shades? You could also use a small print on the pillows and play with the patterns.
Like this, different patterns but they all work together.

The rug is very nice, and I like the floors, but I think you could adjust the furniture placement a little. The sofa looks smooshed into the wall-is there any way to pull it out from against the wall or place it differently? Also, move the chair around a little and add a coffee table and the rug will look great. Adding a table lamp would add some height and visual interest as well.
LOVE the flooring and the rug, looks amazing and I wouldn't change a thing!
I love the rug. It really makes the space big and beautiful.
You might want one of those sticky mats to keep it from wrinkling/waving.
Find a copy of Elle Decor April 2011. Look at page 39
It will show you how much better it will look if you pull the sofa even 6" out from the wall.
Also visually, if you line up the rug with the opening that is on the left hand side of the sofa-i.e. push the rug under the sofa a bit more. it will alos look better.
I like...I think a few things (coffee table, lamps...etc) would just set it off perfectly. Lol at your hubby lounging in the pic while your trying to solve a design crisis. I'd also say the placement is key..maybe try moving furniture and the rug around til your comfortable with it. I learned that from watching Nate and it always seems to work.
I absolutely adore the floors. Before I read your post I looked at the photos and was like "I love that flooring"
I'm super jealous of your floors! I LOVE dark hardwoods....
& I also love the rug ... and want it to be in my living room RIGHT NOW ... where did you get it if you dont mind me asking?
I actually love the wood! I can't wait until we move so I can get dark wood!
I think the area rug really works well in the room too.
I like the rug, you could even try to bring in some purple or dark reds as something outside of the brown/green scheme!
I love the dark hardwood, and I think the rug looks good with the sectional and floors, I am not sure how well is meshes with the paint colour ( I think an earthier paint colour would work better).
I would keep the rug, and pull colours from the rug into throw pillows, and a toss blanket. Maybe add in a darker coloured wood coffee table as well, to break up the rug a bit.
I like the rug a lot! i think some new artwork, new end tables and/or coffee tables, and some bright throw pillows will really complete the look
I love the rug! (and the new look to the room) I thin it adds some depth that a solid color just wouldn't. Also, Gotta love the feet! lol
Thank you ALL for the great suggestions!!! I really appreciate it. I'm suprised that a lot of you like the rug - I really didn't think anyone would like it. Everything I do, I do about 3-4 times!
I was also thinking about re-finishing the hardwood floors (I KNOW - they are brand new but SOOOO dark, they look black!!)
I'm still iffy about the rug though...I just don't know if its *me*. I just feel like a solid color tan rug would look great and add colors in pillows.
Gosh, I don't know..it's so hard to decorate!!! And I really wish I liked the floors more :(
Love the floors and the wall, but honestly, I think the rug takes away from the whole thing. Maybe a rug in a grayish brown color and some texture would help play off the teal gray of the wall and break up the darkness of the floors.
And then you can bring some color and patterns back by putting a grouping of frames about the couch, in perhaps that leaf pattern, or even something bolder, in red or yellow, to give it all a nice pop.
@SoupyCat: Thank you for the advice!! I'm not sure if I would like a grayish brown rug though just because the floors are already brown and I thought a color closest to the color of the couch would look the best. Who knows though, it's so hard to choose!! Thank you so much for the advice, I like your idea of the grouping of frames!! :)
Your couch is so cute! I like the dark hardwood floors and I think the rug goes, but I personally like fuller rugs, but the pattern surely works!
Í love the floors, don't refinish them. The mirror on the wall seems to match them as well. The rug is a nice way to bring in a pattern, I think solid rugs are safe but patterned rugs really make a statement. Try putting the coffee table over it and It hink it will be less overwhelming. I also think you need throw pillows, maybe in the dark brown and something similar to the color on the wall. I would do a solid dark brown and then a pattern that brings int eh wall color. Overall, I really like your colors and think the floor/rug/couch/walls go together but you should play around with placement. I'm also not sure what's going on with the chair on the side, is it black or brown and should it be on or off the rug? Keep tweeking what you have, you have some great building blocks for an interesting room.
@slicey19: Thank you!! The chair is going to be more on the rug, but I just wanted to get the rug underneath a little bit to see what it would look like. The chair is off to the side but we are going to play with it to make it either all off the rug, or all on - but I'd rather have it all ON.
I did take back the rug - and I DID have a coffee table (we are selling it) and instead of a coffee table we put a little ottoman in the middle that is the same color as the chair (DARK brown). I think it goes well, it is small - but I feel like it fits in the space well. Here's a picture...
this is WITHOUT the rug since I did take it back - but I'm thinking about re-buying it (everything I do, I do twice) and I know it clashes with the floor, but I know a lighter colored rug will break it up and look great.
And here's my hubby without his shirt on...don't mind him..lol
I have dark wood floors with a light, neutral wall color. This is how I decorated our living room area. Reminder....we have a duplex down condo in Chicago. The living room is open concept with the dining room and kitchen. The room is smaller than yours and we do not have a TV in this area.

I love it. The floors and rug are in my style. I don't know what I think of the wall color but every thing goes with it nicely.
