On man that SUCKS. I do not understand how someone can do that so close to a wedding...especially if he didn't have a good excuse! I would just start calling whoever you can that does photography in the area to see if anyone is still available. I'm sure there will be someone who will be able to accommodate you if they know your situation. Good luck!
Wierd, I wonder why he would cancel that close to the wedding? Did he say why? He better give you a full refund if you'd paid any type of deposit!
Did you have any back-up photographers you were thinking about before you chose him?
Do you have anything in your contract about him cancelling (like about providing a suitable replacement)?
What kind of person does that? It's not like you can just run out and pick up another photographer.
Where are you located? I'm sure some bees on here would love to give you some last minute reccomendations. If you are anywhere in NorCal or Oregon I have a couple good names!
My advice: try http://www.weddingbee.com/wedding-vendor/lukas-vandyke-photography
He is amazing. I'm very good aquaintances with his wife and they do pretty amazing work. They might be able to work with you.
EDIT: I'm not sure on his prices but they are really good people. Also, he's willing to travel.
He says he'll return all the money we have been sending... He's not from our state so He says he'll return it via check but I asked him to use paypal(we need the money asap).
His reason for canceling is a personal matter...(medical I imagine)
About his contract: I sent the deposit to him along with two signed copies of the contract, he was supposed to send me back a signed copy-of course that never happened! which set off alarms but not enough to think he would cancel this close to the wedding.
I have a couple people in mind, but probably will be booked, our only advantage is that we are having a Friday wedding.
I hope someone can learn a lesson from my bad experience!
What state are you in? If you don't feel comfortable posting that here, you can message me. I'm a photographer & I have a few photographer friends around the USA that I know are good & your friday wedding date will help you out too :)
@ Serabell: we are in New Mexico- our wedding will be in Rio Rancho, NM. Thanks!
Start looking on a Classifieds website under "Photography". A lot of photographer's post on there espeically if they're starting out (and good of course) and want clients!

I don't know anyone around New Mexico, but I'll check & see if any of my photo friends know of anyone. In the meantme, try here:

I'm a photographer & willing to travel, but from Oregon so you may have better finds on wedding bee. Good luck :).
Ugh! That sucks.
I know how you feel. The same thing happened to me a week and a half before my wedding. Like you, I started having bad feelings about him but didn't do anything about it.
He sent me an EMAIL to let me know that he had accidentally double-booked our date and he just realized it. RIGHT. He did call around and found 2 other photogs that were available on our date but I didn't trust him at all after that. Luckily he gave us our deposit back promptly and I was able to book two awesome photographers for the price of one. My pictures turned out great.
I hope it all works out for you!!
If you aren't finding anyone you love, try putting up an ad in the "wanted" section of Craigslist explaining your dilemma (how your initial photog cancelled, etc) and give your budget. I'm CERTAIN you'll get some replies.
Here is a great website for finding a photographer. I just met the founder a couple of weeks ago and love what they are putting together. http://www.snapknot.com/ I can't believe someone would do that to their clients... I would never even imagine. {esp the double booking one!! sheesh}
Good Luck!
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear! That's one of my biggest fears. I really hope it all works out for you!!
That's awful!
But, wait, you didn't keep a copy of the contract? Even if he asked for 2 copies back, you should have photocopied it or something! Hopefully your experience will teach other brides to ALWAYS keep a copy of the contract... If you don't have a copy, you have nothing to stand on. He can shred the 2 you sent him & call it a day.
I truly hope you get your money back & find a good photographer! Good luck!
thats kinda the same thing that happened to me. Lucky me i have a little time. But it is annoying and stressful to have to look for one. my weddings in a friday also and thats my only advantage
Hey I'm getting married in New Mexico too! Our photographer is Allison Ruth....you could give her a call and see what her availability is.

Good Luck! I hope it goes well!
That is so stressful! Ours just cancelled on us last week, at least I have a lot more time than you, but everyone books up so fast where I am from, especially in June, and we already have everything else booked so we can't just change the date! Good luck and hope you find someone soon!
where are you located? i would love to help you out if youre near Atlanta, or at least post your info on a pro photog forum to see if anyone near you can help.

I could kill him right now, how do you cancel 15 days before a wedding?
Worst part is, Initially we loved his work but something kept telling me not to trust him, but I put it aside because he seemed like a great person.
