We just submitted our application to adopt this little cutie through an animal rescue program here in Alberta – we are just waiting for our meet and greet date! This pup is about 3 months old. The rescue program has very little information on his breed, with the exception that he is a mixed breed. His brothers and sisters look totally different (all black). The puppies were picked somewhere in rural northern Alberta. Any thoughts on what kind of mix he is? We are going to adopt him regardless if we are approved, but just wondering what your thoughts and guesses would be!

August20: Hmmm… the first breed that came to mind was German shepard, but what do I know? Lol! Oh, I know he’s CUTE!! Puppies are tons of work so be ready! Put away your shoes and buy lots of toys!!

August20: Mastiff/lab maybe? He’s adorable! What are you going to name him?

You will be able to tell more when he gets older… But his coloring and fact he has less “fur” than a German Shepherd reminds me of a Belgian Malinois. This is my baby below. He is a mal as well. He was a stray that showed up a few months ago, but I imagine that may be sort of what he looked like as a pup. Obviously mixed because your pup’s ears “hang”. My boy’s are semi-prick sometimes too.

PS Belgian Malinois are a type of “Dutch Shepherd”. In most of the world it is one breed standard with three different acceptable colorings, etc. But in the US we have three seperate breed standards – one which looks sort of like our boys but with a skinnier face and ears that stand up, and another which is black like his brothers and sisters.

I would say Shepherd/Lab mix, though it’s hard to say when they’re pups. He sure is cute, though!

August20: I work at an animal shelter and see a lot of similar looking pups. We’d likely list him as a shepherd/lab cross but as people mentioned, it’s tough to tell until they grow up.
