My husband loves to play Minecraft, so when we were deciding on what kind of heavy bases we’d use for our ceremony backdrop, he floated the idea of something Minecraft-inspired.
For those who aren’t familiar, Minecraft is a world in which everything is made of blocks. Some of them have grass on top and look like this…
Which is why we bought cinderblocks, brown paint, and a roll of moss to make these…
Which eventually became part of this…
Did anyone else have wedding elements that were basically a little wink to each other or sort of an homage to your nerdiness?

We’re planning on include a very subtle nod to the movie “Harold and Maude”; the movie reflects our relationship, our personalities, and our families. For those that have seen the movie, our references will include organic champagne, karaoke night so that people can “sing out”, and a possible tree planting adventure.
For those who haven’t seen the movie, and have a somewhat dark sense of humor and/or distaste for authority, I highly recommend it! It’s on Netflix instant watch.

No, we didn’t but we should have! The most we did was a record player groom’s cake since he’s a huge audio ‘nerd’.

Our ceremony music, first dance song, my dress and cutting the cake with “Sting” are the BIG ones, but honestly, all through out, there will be nods to our geeksides. Lots of odes to video games, movies, books and comic books. It is sort of a test to see which of our guests will be able to pick up on them. We’ll know, who among our friends are as rad as we are, if they get it! 😉

Omg, that’s great. I love that idea.

@sarasouth: That is awesome!!! I love how you incorporated minecraft into your wedding! And your backdrop came out fabulous!
My husband loves zombie movies, so I bought zombie cake toppers for the wedding. It wasn’t subtle, but it was ‘secret’ because only 2 other people knew about it ahead of time. The zombies ended up being a big hit on our wedding day. 🙂

I’m trying to find some subtle ways to work lobsters in… not sure how, but I’ve called FI my “lobster” since day 1 because just after we got together my best friend started quoting from that Friends episode where Phoebe calls Ross Rachel’s lobster and it just stuck.

We were supposed to. We have the same initials (before the wedding) So we were just going to put one pair of initials on the cake and let people wonder until they figured it out. I was really excited about it, then I walked into the reception and saw this.
WTF was *my* cake topper?!?! I *told* the bakery I had my own!! I was a little bit upset that nobody thought to change them out, because that was going to be our funny “us” thing. Ah, well. At least the cake was good. 🙂

We are including musical nods to the TV show Scrubs throughout our wedding.

Are signature drinks are named after Star Trek starships. Also, in our wedding video, we’re sneaking in a little bit of the theme song to Star Trek’s Voyager.

I want to have our rings engraved with “/love” (WoW emote) we met on World of Warcraft. Other things may include our WoW avatars as groomscake toppers or WoW related stuff in activity books if we do them. I hope more things come to us as we go.
And when our engagement is official I’m going to be an uber dork and change my Facebook pic to Patrick Stewart on the bridge of the USS Enterprise with the caption”Engaged!”

We love our dog to bits, but can’t have her as a part of the ceremony due to distance restraints, so I surprised FI by having her worked into our invitation suite:
Also, because I’m a complete Harry Potter nerd, I am using a deathly hallows shaped charm to decorate my bouquet. I love the things the series has to say about the power of love and family, so that will be my subtle nod to my fandom. 🙂

Mine will be the pumpkin pie favors I’m going to make. ^.^

@sarasouth: Might I say that I love your subtle nod to Minecraft there! That is fabulous! 🙂
There will be touches of our nerdiness throughout my wedding. Some of the songs we have chosen will probably not be recognized by all the folks at the wedding but those who do know what they are from will likely enjoy them. For example, I’m walking down the aisle to the song “Eve” from the Wall-E soundtrack. It is a very pretty orchestral song that has a lot of meaning to my fiance and me (one of “our” favorite movies is Wall-E). Not everyone will probably realize what it is all about unless they know us well. We’re also bringing a bit of funniness into the reception entrance song by wakling in to “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley. Internet folks will understand and hopefully laugh at that one. 😛 Our table numbers are going to have old comic book covers and movies we love behind the numbers themselves. And we are also doing a children’s activity book that will include one picture of my fiance and me as Pokémon Trainers for the kids to color in (yes, we both still enjoy playing Pokémon :P). I imagine there will likely be more as well before it is all said and done. 🙂

Love all these gems!
We have a secret, too….and I’d rather not post it because I feel pretty easily trace-able, but it’s been no end of fun for my fiance and me to speculate about how our friends/family will react when we spring it on them. Most of our wedding details are pretty public – that is, we’re sharing colors and ideas and all that with the people close to us. So, to have something that just we know and no one else sees coming…has been awesome.
