Hubby and I finally narrowed down our list of 20+ boy names to only four- yippee!! Each name has special meaning to us :)
I have a cousin named Asher. I like that name because it's biblical. Also, Parker is cute.
I'm not too concerned about that considering it's more of a tween-girl thing that will probably be just another fad in a few years..
@miss-spunkin: Maybe the Twilight association will die down, but names in pop culture always become really popular suddenly- so it might be a really common name for the next few years. And I wouldn't call Twilight "tween fad" because all the fans I know are my age and some even older. So they're the ones having and naming kids.
I have negative personal associations with all the others, oddly enough... but I'm voting for Parker because I think I like the name best, objectively.
Without knowing the Twilight connection (never watched them or read the books... or paid much attention), I like Emmett. Makes me think of someone strong and capable.
it actually means strong:) and I honestly didn't associate it with Twilight either, he's not even a main character really.
Asher makes me think of a jewish boy since it's a jewish name. Are you jewish?
I voted for Emmett and Parker. I like Emmett because I'm biased to E-names and it's not extremely common. It's a good name all around. Same with Parker- strong and I can picture a cute little boy named Parker along with a grown, masuline man named Parker.
it's a biblical Hebrew name, we're Christian hence why we like both Asher and Gideon :) it also means happy, blessed and overall we love the way it sounds.
we also tried to choose names that will transition into adulthood/careers well. Especially for a boy, I think that's important.
I voted for Asher and Emmett. When I was looking at names for our baby boy, I liked Asher because of the Hebrew origin and that it is unique without being too out there. I also like Emmett...I have never seen Twlight so I would not have made any connection with that movie/show and the name. All 4 of the names are super cute so you can't go wrong :)
I'm just saying, the most popular baby names are Twilight related right now (Edward, Jacob, Bella, etc.) so it's not meant to be snarky, just if you were trying to avoid mainstream. Sorry I brought it up!
oh no don't be sorry! I guess I would like to know if people were thinking of twilight when I say my boy's name haha, or if people will think I'm naming my son after a twilight character (def not! But you never know). It's a good reminder tho, that because of twilight, it may go through a fad now.
@KatyElle: When I hear Emmett I think of the super-stacked Twilight character, too!
Twilight transcends many generations (from my teenage sister to my 50+ mother, for example), but as long as the association doesn't bother you, Emmett is a good name. It's actually my pick of your names.
Asher seems more feminine to me but that's probably because I think of the young female character from Dexter.
I like Gideon the best followed closely by Emmett. I've never seen Twilight nor have I read the books so I wasn't aware that he was a character. Great choices and good luck!
I love Asher. Parker is nice, too, though it makes me think of Spider-Man...;)
I love Parker! DH and I are actually considering this name for our future son. We're not TTC yet (still a few years away), but it's always fun to talk about names!
I love them all, except Gideon. Only because it's kind of awkward to say, in my opinion, and makes it sound...old? I can't picture a baby named that. I know, I'm a tad odd.
I loooove the other three. Dammit Twilight, Emmett is a good name! And honestly, so are a lot of the Twilight names. Lol. I love Parker, it's on my short-list. And Asher is a really cute name as well. I have a friend that wants to name her Son Archer, and they remind me of eachother.
@MrsStrz: Oh that's funny, I have NEVER heard of a girl named Asher, it's a boy in the bible too.
@Mrs Grape: Actually the reason I love Parker SO much is because it's my maiden name (which I miss more than I like to admit!), so it has super special meaning to us!
@AmeliaBedelia: I had initially thought the same thing, especially since in the bible, Gideon is a judge (think long white beard, staff etc lol). But then I saw a little boy named Gideon and he was SO cute, and the more I said it, the more I liked it :) plus, they don't stay little for long :)
@miss-spunkin: :( But they should! Lol. I guess I get that same mental image, and I see a baby wearing a suit and smoking a pipe. Ha.
In my origingal post I forgot to say that I *do* have a favorite, haha. My favorite is Parker, and then Emmett.
Emmett is my favorite, despite the Twilight fad. Parker would be my 2nd choice.
@MrsStrz: Dexter's stepdaughter's name is Astor, not Asher. (DH and I are big fans of the show) :)
@miss-spunkin: I like Parker the best, then Emmett, which reminds me of Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys (which isn't a bad thing). I have never read or watched the Twilight stuff, so I don't associate the name with that story.
Okay, I was going to say Emmett until I read that it's a Twilight name. Totally dislike Twilight names, even though some of them are lovely, just because it is such a fad and they are all being really over-used. Still, I may like Emmett best because my only other choice would be Asher. But the only person I ever heard of called that was a girl, so I think of it as a girl's name, however nice. Still, at least Emmett and Asher are nice names, if it isn't for the connections.
Parker.... well, I hate surnames as first nams but I know that's a normal thing to do in the US so maybe that doesn't matter. My friend's dog is called Parker so to me it's a dog's name. But if you didn't know the dog, and you lived somewhere where surnames didn't sound bad as first names, then Parker could suffice.
Gideon I totally hate. Several reasons but I just don't even think it is a nice name so I won't bore you with my reasons.
@miss-spunkin: Esme is really, really high in name popularity league tables just because of Twilight. As is Isabella, and Jacob, and all the rest. Just because Tween girls like it, don't assume that parents aren't hearing those names and thinking they're super-original. That's how names get over-used and if the fad does end, the name gets even more dated. Esme is a prime example. I have no idea where Emmett rates in name tables.
I can't shake the Criminal Minds reference for Gideon. My favorite is probably Emmett of that group.
@VickyAurea: Parker isn't just a surname however, it has become fairly common as a first name. I have met several "Parker's". I just really loved my maiden name, and since it doubled well as a first name, it fit well.
And about Emmett, I definitely never associated it with Twilight, and I like the name as a name. It's about 250 on the list of baby names on the US social security site. I really don't want to obsess over the popularity :)
@miss-spunkin: Parker may well be used as a first name fairly often nowadays but it originates as a surname, hence I classify it as a surname used as a first name. Much like Taylor, Harrison, Jackson, Nelson, etc..
I really like the name asher! i've never met anyone with that name
@Mrs. Amethyst: Haha, after 5 seasons of Dexter I don't know why I am thinking "Asher". Oh well! I still think Asher is feminine-sounding. :)
Apparently I'm in the minority but I LOVE the name Gideon!
@Mrs.KMM: I think because it's not very common, or heard very often, the majority tend to shy away from it. It's one of my husband's favorites :)
Asher is rad! I would name a son that except my sister claimed it back in the day.
Wow, I'm in the minority. I love Gideon. It has several positive connotations for me, and I think it's just a lovely unique name.
The others I like okay, though Emmett is not a favorite--all I can think of is Twilight with that name.
I voted Emmett.... and then read the comments. I had no clue that Emmett was a twilight name! I've never read the books or watched the movies. I know one boy named Emmett (he is 7) and he is an amazing kid, so I have nothing but positive connotations with that name :)
I've read all the Twilight books, and I did not pick up the connection to "Emmett" at all. Granted it's been a few years since I read them...
I still like Emmett best. :) I think it's really cute.
I love the name Parker, but I'm not a fan of the other ones at all. My cousins had a dog names Gideon when we were kids. Emmett reminds me of Twilight, and Asher reminds of the Aniter Blake series.
@Mrs. Spring: THANK YOU! haha finally. I had also read all the books and seen the movies, but I didn't feel Emmett was a significant enough character, and when I first saw the name in a baby name book, I didn't even think of Twilight!
@noodlefish: well, like I said before, I definitely didn't choose Emmett BECAUSE of Twilight lol. I suppose it was "accidental"? And I'm not a Twi-hard so it doesn't matter to me (shrugs).
