We are honeymooning in Oahu, Hawaii (our wedding is Oct 2 and we're going immediately!) I think our honeymoon location was the first thing we agreed on when it came to wedding planning! We wanted to do it on a pretty tight budget $3500 and so far, so good! Since Hawaii doesn't offer all inclusive packages our travel agent booked us a flight and hotel (with breakfast included each day) for just under $2000. Surely, we can survive 5 days on $1500.
A friend of mine who recently got engaged and is getting married two weeks after I am, just booked her honeymoon at the same place we are staying. She used Expedia and got hotel, airfare, a dinner cruise and something else small for just over $2100.
The hotel probably isnt the nicest hotel on the island but we're not going to just stay in the hotel! It's the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel...check it out!
$5,000 is a really good budget. Are you definitely looking to keep it within the US/Canada? Because you could get some wonderful deals to go overseas at that time of the year.
cozumel, it has everything, 4-wheeler tours, riding scooters, scuba diving, you can take a ferry to the mainland and go to the mayan ruins, dolphin excursions! we spent less than $3000 for ours and flew out of denver, had all inclusive(which included most of our tours, food, drinks and night entertainment) that included our airfare, hotel in denver the night before and parking. here are some pics of when we went

It sounds like your FI is like my husband. Not really a cruise person. There isn't a lot to do on the ship and if you want activities you have to wait for the shore excursions.
What about coming here to Florida? They have some amazing deals beacuse of the oil incident but the beaches as of right now are still clean. In September you should still be able to find clean beaches especially on the Atlantic Ocean side.
What about flying and going on a cruise out of Florida? We did one to Jamaica and one of our shore excursions was a 4x4 trip.
We are pretty open to leaving the States too. I just worry about killing two days with traveling all day long is all if we go out of the country.
How about Canada? Nova Scotia is beautiful, on the coast, with lots of things to do!
we left denver at 6am, and got to cozumel and 2ish, and left cozumel around 11am and got back around 7ish... so we milked everyday! if you can get a direct flight(which is possible) it's only a 2 1/2 hours flight or so, less time than it take to get to most places in the us.. we stayed at the cozumel palace and would reccomend it to ANYONE! it was amazing!
@brittanymichelle: My FI is totally against Mexico unfortunately.
@caszos: We are avoiding the Caribbean due to hurricane season during then. I also hate suffocating humidity and extreme heat--we live in Colorado afterall--so the south would probably be out. :(
I know we have so many restrictions. That's why this feels so hard. I swear, this entire planning process has been nothing but stressful for me and this one thing should be fun to plan---uh, no, we get into arguments over it! It's crazy! My FI has been all over the US when they took trips as a child. The only place I've ever been was Orlando in November to go to Disney World and the humidity and heat even then about did me in to not leave the hotel room ;)
@Curlysue: hey there fellow denver bee! Our budget is about the same and we're spending 7 nights at the Sandals Royal Bahamian. We'll be flying out at around 1:00 am and in the Bahamas by 10:00!!! I'm thrilled about the idea of being at the resort at 10, however the hubs isn't too happy about being at the airport at 11:00. lol I think our return time is leaving the Bahamas at 3:00 pm and getting into Denver at 11:00, so like brittanymichelle, we're milking the resort time for all we can. lol
*Edit* I thought of another idea. How about Oregon? Several years ago, some friends and I stayed in Astoria (where Goonies was filmed) for several days. It was GORGEOUS and not far at all from some really cool beaches to explore. After several days in Astoria, we drove to Mt. Hood and stayed in a cabin and chilled out there. So freakin fun.
curlysue- have you ruled out alaska? it is A-MA-ZING in the summer.. might be worth looking into cause they have all sorts of outdoor activities, but the trip is an 8 hour fly time usually with a layover in seattle.. or maybe go to seattle, it is really beutiful their pretty much all year, and they have so many different things to do! and it's on the coast so you can have beaches too, just no ocean swimming(the water is a bit chillie)
@JsDragonfly: LOL I remember the Goonies! We watched that movie, and Princess Bride, so much we killed the VHS tapes. Oregon sounds beautiful! I'll look into that!
@brittanymichelle: We initially REALLY wanted to go on a cruise to Alaska. But since we aren't honeymooning in June or July, but instead at the end of September after the wedding, I've read so much how it can be kinda crappy then because the tourist season is over come early September and it can start in on the rainy season in August and even snow in September sometimes. I think we will have to take a trip there for sure. My FI went there for a entire month one summer when he was younger and loved it. We'd do a "mini-moon" now but I worry we might not make it for the true honeymoon a year from now---my married couple friends who have done this say it usually gets put further on the backburner due to this or that. UGH
What about New England or Napa Valley?
I've never been, but I've heard that Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are amazing, both situated right near the Atlantic Ocean. Napa Valley has some beautiful scenery, and you could take detours to see the water as well.
MV and Nantucket are great, but that's not the best time of year for those islands weather wise - they're best visited in the late summer.
In this month's MS Wedding there is a road trip from San Diego to San Francisco i the honeymoon section. You could do something similar, just stay in San Diego (there is plenty to do there, anyway) or do a few days there, then hop a flight and do a few days in the San Francisco area.
Hawaii is a great option, as mentioned above, can be very affordable from the west coast and is tropical without being too humid.
San Juan Islands in Washington state are amazing, too, if you wanted to see the Pacific.
Atlantic side I'd recommend St Augustine, FL or Savannah, GA as both are historically incredible, very romantic and have great weather that time of year.
What about British Columbia - they have mountains and ocean - and they must therefore have lots of outdoorsy things to do that your FI would like. Plus your dollar will go a little bit further...

Initially we were going to take a cruise from NYC, out to sea and hit up two spots in Canada and then back down the coast to see some US cities before returning to NYC all within 7 days. Now we have no plans because my FI admitted he wasn't crazy about the shore excursions at all. We are getting married in early September but are waiting until the last week of September to leave for the honeymoon. We have $5,000 available but don't want to use it all if possible and that has to include everything (flights, hotel/resort stay, shopping, food, etc). We also would love to be on a coast somewhere because I've never seen the ocean before and would like to see that. We only have 7 days total to get there and back (we are in the Denver area). My FI loves to have activities to go do like 4x4ing on trails or something instead of sitting in the shade for the afternoon. We aren't swimsuit/lay on a beach people for sure ;) This is also our first vacation together. Sure, we've gone to see family but never a true vacation.
Can you help suggest an amazing place for us to go?! We want our honeymoon to be unforgettable because we doubt we'll go on a trip like this for quite some time---want to have kids in the next few years.
