we are having a similar style wedding...using a 3-piece string trio with a banjo! :) That would fit the Derby theme!
I was going to suggest an acoustic guitar as well. Or if you wanted it a little fancier, guitar sounds wonderful when paired with a violin.
ooh, I like it.
I suggested a fiddle to FI and got a weird look in response...
How about suggestions for non-traditional wedding-esque songs on acoustic guitar?
I was at a wedding with an acoustic guitar and you could barely hear it (and I was in the wedding party so it was right in front with me!). I'd recommend either getting a group or amplification of some kind.
As I remember, I think the guitarist played "The Wedding Song," by Peter, Paul and Mary. I had never heard of it before, so I think that's a little less mainstream for weddings.

Hi, Bees!
We're getting married under a large pavilion at the same site as our reception. We're going for a relaxed feel (guys in suits, 'hand-picked' looking bouquets, etc) with a Kentucky Derby theme/influence (married on Derby day next year - 365 days from tomorrow!- and dad's a racehorse trainer!) but don't know what to do for music.
A string quartet seems a little formal, no one's crazy about a CD player...
single string instrument? keyboard? something else?
