That's an awesome idea and one I hadn't thought of.
Kids are usually pretty good and finding ways to play outside even without extra toys, but the addition of a ball or two, bubbles, and the like makes it even better.
Is there an area where they can write/draw with sidewalk chalk? Maybe a frisbee could be fun?
ONe other that we used to play a lot as kids was bean bag tic tac toe. You throw bean bags at a tic tac toe board and try to score an X or O.
I'll be interested to see what other folks come up with.
i love the bubbles idea...just imagine the pictures!
i would stay away from balls/frisbees/other things that are thrown, just because you don't want them hitting the other guests or taking out the cake or something. is it all grass, or could you bring some sidewalk chalk?
I hadn't thought about this...but now that you mentioned it. I think I will do a coloring table, hoola hoops, bubbles (which I will probably play with too b/c I LOVE bubbles), outdoor bowling, and maybe horseshoes? I have a family of big kids so I am sure even the adults will be coloring and hoola hooping
Oooooh tic tac toe sounds like a good idea!
I would definitely be interested in sidewalk chalk, but there's no concrete or stone patio to be heard of at our venue (it's pretty rustic).
Thanks! :D
If there werre a bounce house I have a feeling the kids would be crowded out by my partner & I's friends (as well as us) hah that would be too fun though!
eta: Just had another thought pop into my head: pin wheels

I know my kid always wants one around easter when they are in the stores by the check-out, and I know there are a few diy-tutorials floating around the bee too.
that is a super good point, kids can get rowdy! You're always a voice of reason around here <3
hoola hoops sounds like a great idea!
This is why I <3 the 'bee, great ideas! keep them coming :)
@missmouse29: oh man...I used to LOVE these when I was a kid. Hmmm...maybe I can use them as the "centerpiece" for the kids table and then they can take them home?
I used cryaons and stuff for coloring, bubbles, pin wheels, puzzles, jump ropes, glow sticks (which were such a hit once it got dark) and a few other little things like that. I tried to stay away from anything messy (i had visions of my 3 yr old nephew coming up to me and getting paint or something all over my dress) or that could be thrown or kicked and with my luck, hit an old lady in the head.
@sjones724: jump ropes and glow sticks just completed my list....ha...LOVE the bees
@Mrs. Meowerson: my nieces and nephews are too rambunctious for frisbees. Centerpieces would be broken, people would be hit, definitely no frisbees for me =)

What kinds of outdoor activities would you have set up for kids (we're only having a few in the 2-6yr range) at a mid afternoon outdoor reception?
We're planning on having a 'kids' activity table with crayons, colouring books, stickers, goodie bags, a few toys, etc. But as a parent I know that kids this age aren't going to want to sit still for very long, and are going to be acting differently than they normally would due to the whole "OMG PEOPLE" factor, so in light of that what other types of outdoor activities would you suggest for kidlets outside?
We were thinking about having a bubble station (you know with the giant wands and whatnot) just for the kids, because lets face it kids + bubbles = love & hours of entertainment.
Another thought we had was maybe a soccer ball or large bouncy type ball for random kid play, or maybe some balloons (though I am not 100% on that one).
We'll also be having Boccie Ball, croquet and a few other lawn games set up for the older crowd (though the little ones will be welcome to join their parents if they want).
Any suggestions or thoughts more than welcome and hugely appreciated!
