My fiancé is dying for an outdoor ceremony but our wedding is set for September in indiana and the weather will be unpredictable. I personally would prefer a church indoor wedding but feel wouldnt mind the outdoors. I am thrilled he cares this much and don’t want to crush him on the one big request he has. So some pros and tips for outdoor weddings would be helpful! Also opinions on whether or not a big ball gown would be appropriate for an outdoor wedding or look silly. Finally tips that could make an outdoor wedding feel formal like I want.

What about a courtyard or large patio area at a church? Some churches have beautiful grounds and outdoor areas that would be suitable for a ceremony. Then you could have the santuary as a back up in case of weather issues and still get a bit of the church feel.
Ball gowns can be beautiful at outdoor ceremonies as long as the locations are a bit more formal–beach weddings, park weddings, etc might be a little odd with a ballgown.

I personally am fighting hard to find a nice outdoor wedding location.
My FH and I are outdoorsy – we tend to wind up camping at least one weekend a year. It’s usually due to our hobbies, but we’re outdoors, in the doors.. and love a chance to take a stroll.
That said, I think its beautiful to be surrounded by natures (possibly changing trees?) for a ceremony.
My only thought – have a back up plan!
Whether it’s a deposit on a tent if necessary, an indoor area you can relocate to if the weather is bad. If it’s going to be sunny and hot – hand fans, parasols, cool drinks pre-reception. If possibly cool – look for someplace buffeted from the wind. Maybe courtyard of a building would work well to try to block potential wind.
