we're having an outdoor wedding. we didn't have it yet so no stories, but i would definetly make sure to have a plan b. it's taking a lot of stress off of me knowing that if it rains, then oh well. it wont be as picture perfect and pretty as i imagined, but we'll still be married.
I went to school in Ohio and from what I remember, May is hit or Miss with the temps and weather. I think a tent would be a good decision. Especially if there isn't another shelter adequate for your ceremony/reception if the weather is bad.
Our outdoor wedding was almost a disaster. We had a tent for the reception and planned to book a last minute tent for the ceremony if needed. It rained all morning so we called in for the ceremony tent but it was WAY smaller than it needed to be. My husband spent the morning buying the small town out of ponchos. It stopped raining right before the ceremony and started again right as we were finishing up pictures. If it had rained for the ceremony I can't even explain how upset I would have been, there is no way that everyone would fit under that little tent!
So, I'd advice booking a "back up" tent (and make sure it's big enough).
I think that a tent with sides can hold up in almost any weather and so that would be enough of a rain plan for me. We ended up not using sides even though it was POURING during the reception b/c it would have gotten really hot in there.
Overall I am still glad we did the wedding outside. Everyone had a great time and no one will forget our wedding any time soon.
Aw Thats so Great Daisy! That is what i'm hoping for. I hope to still be able to be outdoors even if we have bad weather; but I want everyone to be compfortable. We would probably end up having the ceremony either under a large tent or in a church & then hold the reception outdoors. Thanks for the advice on the size of the tent
I am having an outdoor wedding in Ohio in September. I think no matter where you are, you need to have a good back-up plan. If we can't have our ceremony and cocktail hour outdoors, we will move the whole wedding into our reception site. I would definately reccomend putting up a tent for the reception no matter what and having the restroom facilities easily accesible!
I am not sure where you are in Ohio, but if you are in NE Ohio and want some information on outdoor venues, I am happy to help, I just played this game a few months ago.
I'm not in Ohio, but in Iowa. We had an outdoor wedding at a State Park. It turned out great. It ended up being a little too cold that night though, so we ended up having the reception inside the Lodge there. I agree, no matter what you want a back up plan.
Definitely look for somewhere with bathrooms ('nuff said) and a source of potable water (otherwise, you have to lug it all in). We were in a state park, with pit toilets (put those slow-release airwick things in there, and hand sanitizer) and a water pump (that we used for drinking water).
I also highly recommend shade of some sort for your guests (whether you hand out umbrellas or have a shelter or whatever) and have bug spray available.
Oh, we also advised our female guests to wear shoes without heels--so they wouldn't be digging into the grass and getting messy/tripping.

So we're thinking about having our ceremony & reception outdoors. I am in OHIO; & we are planning a MAY 2011 wedding. Do any of you beautiful-bees have any advice on outdoor weddings? Especially in the area?
I am thinking about looking into renting a shelter house @ the lake & possibly trying to put up a large tent incase of weather where the sides can be left off if it's nice or put down if it's nasty outside. I figured the shelter house already has electric and bathrooms and they even have fireplaces in them. I thought it would be a good place for the food & Bar. (State park told me I could apply for an alcohol permit)
Have any of you had outdoor weddings; tell me your disaster or success stories please & what advice you can give!!!
Thank You All!!!
