I went to an outdoor wedding just last year, and it was beautiful! Their was some sort of microphone up front (either from the Venue or the DJ? Not sure, the groom has friends in the DJ / music business so it could have come from there), and it was nice. Actually, I went to another outdoor wedding where they used a microphone too...so maybe you can get one from the DJ? If you're not having a DJ, if you look around you can probably rent some sort of system for the day for that purpose (because you'll want one for the ceremony, the toasts, etc.).
On a side note, I'm also having an outdoor wedding and I hadn't even thought of this!! Thanks!
@MerryWidow: You're welcome! It's always been a worry of mine because BF has been to a wedding outdoors and he couldn't hear a darn thing!
Yes we will be having a DJ, so if they let me borrow their mic that would work really well!! Hopefully it's cordless :P
So does anyone know - if the DJ lets us borrow the mic is it a nightmare to set up speakers and such at the ceremony location (not going to be SUPER close to the reception location) ??
I would be concerned about the weather for your wedding more than anything. Just noticed you have April as your date and you're in Canada. IDK what the weather is like then but as an Ohioan, I wouldn't consider an outdoor wedding in April because of rain.
@kayberry: We are having an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception at the same venue and the DJ is setting up two sound systems (small additional charge).
I would ask your DJ what they are willing to do to accomodate both areas, they may just throw in some assistance for free.
@jpalm13: Yeah weather is a concern! April is our anniversary date - we haven't picked a wedding date yet due to not knowing where we'll be getting married!
If it's outdoors we'll be moving the date for sure. Probably anywhere from August-September because I don't want to sweat my arse off or freeze.
Usually we get lucky and the weather calms down August/September
Treejewel19: Ooh that would be perfect. I will have to make sure to have an accomodating DJ then! Thanks for the advice!
We had an outdoor ceremony, indoor reception, but no dancing and no DJ. But the venue rented speakers and mic for us.The officiant wore a lapel mic and just unclipped it and held it for us when we read our vows. It wasn't too expensive. My BIL also had an outdoor destination wedding ceremony and they were able to rent a mic and speaker set up.
Renting the equipment shouldn't be a problem.

Bees I need help!
It turns out the venue I was in love with has recently been bought out and now no longer hosts receptions and the ceremony site is too small (holds 90 - we have 120).
So in my determined quest to find somewhere unique and beautiful I stumbled on a winery on an island 1.5 hours away from my hometown. So here's my questions bees:
Have any of you had outdoor weddings/attended outdoor weddings and if so, was it hard to hear the vows or anything else? Was it windy or too sunny or generally uncomfortable?
The nice thing about this venue is both the ceremony area and the outdoor reception area are paved so I like that. I'd probably have a tent put up for the reception.
Again, for bees who have attended/hosted outdoor weddings and had tents, did you find it tacky looking? Were you able to bust a move and enjoy yourself? Was it hard to hear the music/speeches?

here's the website for the venue, there aren't any pictures of the indoor reception areas but there is a nice picture of a tent on the patio (where the reception would be) pictures 28, 29, 30, 31
And here is a wedding that used the venue that I've been looking at

What do you guys think? Is it possible to get extension cords and have a mic for the ceremony?
