I’m 28, and I’ve been on the pill since I was 22. I started on it because I began developing ovarian cysts every month (simple functional cysts, one as large as 2.5 inches, confirmed by ultrasound). I always had very painful periods, both cramps-wise and terrible intestinal pain (diagnosed as IBS which was exacerbated during menstruation). The pill stopped the cysts and my periods became manageable for the first time in my life. However, about a year and a half ago I started feeling pain in my left ovary again. I thought it was another cyst, but an ultrasound didn’t detect anything abnormal. Every single month the pain starts right at the very end of my period, and continues for several days to a week. It’s mostly on my left side, but I have felt some pain on the right side as well. I’ve had several ultrasounds, and nothing has found anything unusual. The pain feels directly related to movement of nearby organs (i.e. digestion, urination). I know it’s my ovary- when I was ovulating, I had pain from ovulation, in the same exact spot. I have suspected for years that I may have endometriosis, but I’ve never had a laparoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. My gyno suspects that I am feeling pain from adhesions (either from the past cysts, or something else), but has essentially said unless I have a problem conceiving, or the pain becomes unmanageable, she advises me to just keep taking the pill, since that is what she would have me do even if she surgically confirmed endo. I’m so frustrated by this answer. There is something wrong in there. My periods shouldn’t have been so painful that I would pass out, no one should be forming painful cysts every month, and no one should have this gnawing pain after every period. I want to TTC sometime in the next year, but I’m terrified that going off of the pill will bring all the pain and cysts back, and that I’ll have trouble conceiving. My husband thinks I should get a new doctor, but I’m not really sure that any other doctor would do anything different. What is there to do, really, short of cutting me open? And I don’t want that any more than they do. I just want to know what the problem is, and to stop having this pain every month! I guess I’m just curious if anyone else has ever experienced similar symptoms, and did you receive a diagnosis? Did you have trouble conceiving? Did you find relief?
