Ovary torsion symptoms

I had one last summer.  I think that honestly you’ll know if it’s more than just a cyst.  Before mine twisted, I’d had 5+ cysts burst that were incredibly painful (knocked me down for 2-3 days and I would be taking Vicodin constantly).  This was WAY beyond any of those and it scared me and DH.

Basically, it felt like pain exploding through me.  It was on my right side and my doctor encouraged me to go to he closest ER.  They ran all of the tests for appendicitis, but the appendix was fine.  The pain was from my hip bone down into my groin, with lots of cramping. Could not sit up right, could only be in a reclined position. Lost my appetite entirely and was very nauseated. Ran a slight fever.  Pain was not under control at all, even with IV medications.  I wound up being released from ER and sent home for 48 hours until my doctor could see me.  There was NO change in that at all.  It was a constant pain.

If you’re concerned, go to an urgent care or ER and ask to be checked out.

My doctor basically told me that if its a pain that can be controlled with ibuprofen or a similar over the counter pain killers, then its not serious enough to warrant concern.

Gypsygal6:  I had a baseball sized cyst almost 2 years ago. We waited a month after my initial ER visit (I had no idea what was wrong) before doing a second set of ultrasounds.

They told me it would be the worst pain you’ve ever felt, to the point where you were non-functioning and vomiting.

I definitely had quite a lot of pain with my cyst, sometimes very sharp pain that would nearly take my breath away, but it was never prolonged and after a month, my cyst magically disappeared (burst, reabsorbed, something).

Gypsygal6:  Yeah I would sometimes feel fine, then every once in a while would have sharp sharp abdominal pain. So sharp it would nearly make me dizzy. Mine was large enough that I had pain while using the restroom too (sorry if that’s tmi).

They talked to me about torsion but said you would definitely know if it was happening, that is pain that doesn’t go away. OBVIOUSLY if you are very worried about it, please go get it checked out!!

Do you know what kind of cyst you have? They originally thought mine was a dermoid because on the ultrasound it looked like a partially solid mass. Turns out it was just fluid filled w/ some blood in it (which made it look solid). It was poof gone in 30 days and I’ve never had one since… So weird.

I had just started Depo birth control when it happened (I use a different method now) so I have no clue if that is what caused it.

Like others have said, you will know when it is torsion. There will be no comfortable position and it will feel like pain you have never experienced before.

I don’t know if I should be one to talk about cyst, as I had a 14 lb ovarian cyst with zero pain. The images from my PET scan were crazy (all of my organs were pushed up and out of the way to make room for the cyst).

If you are vomiting and unable to control your pain with over the counter pain medication (ibuprofen is the best but please dose correctly, 1 tablet won’t cover it), then go to the ER (unless you have an urgent care that will actually do an ultrasound). Just be prepared for the craziness that is a Monday night in the ER….

Gypsygal6:  Let us know how your ultrasound checks out! Good luck, I know it can be scary.

Yep, I ended up in the ER with an ovary torsion.  I was in excruciating pain.  It required emergency surgery in the middle of the night to remove that ovary.  Good times.

Gypsygal6:  I’m so so glad to hear that!! That was the weirdest pain I’ve had in my life I think. Ugh! So glad you are feeling better 🙂
