I’m having an over night sleep study in April, and then staying the next day to do the daytime sleepiness test, where I take a few naps during the day. Has anyone ever had a sleep study before? I’d like to hear your experiences with this, since I am a little scared. You can either type it here or PM me! Thanks 🙂

I’ve had two sleep studies. Since it was for sleep apnea, I had one with a cpap and one without.
It’s not scary, but it is uncomfortable.
I checked in around 8:00 PM. The person that was on duty that night, hooked all kind of wires up to me all over my body(head, arms, chest, legs, and waist). They use some king of gunky glue to make it all stick and it will get in your hair. It feels gross, but you only notice that the next day when they remove everything. The room looks like a cheap hotel room for the most part. You have a tv and the usual stuff.
I guess the part that sucks the most is that the wires are all over the place, so it’s difficult to get any significant sleep and you are soooo tired the next day. I did mine on a weeknight and had to leave the sleep study, haul ass home to shower, and then get to work.
When I had the second one done, I made sure to take a couple of benedryl with me and that seemed to help in getting at least a little bit of sleep.
Let me know if you have any questions. It’s been a couple of years since I had mine done, so I’m just giving you the short story.

@Paigey: oh my, thank you 🙂 they said i show signs of narcolepsy. I’ve never fallen asleep without warning, but I am so tired during the day and I cant make it through the day without a nap..I also dont sleep at night the whole way through and have a hard time getting good, deep sleep. Such as right now…I feel like I could just take a nap and then the rest of the day would be fine. It’s been like this for years and FI finally complained enough about my sleeping that I decided to go see someone.
I’m just scared, I dont know why. I’ve never been scared before for a test…partly, I guess, because I’m afraid of hearing what they say?
I know I wont’ fall asleep! Then I have to do the nap portion the next day. This sounds so boring, LOL. Do they unhook you to go to the bathroom?

I didn’t end up getting one but I posted a similar thread to this about a year ago. Maybe some of those responses will be helpful for you: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/anyone-ever-done-a-sleep-study.

Yeah I totally agree with the prior poster. It’s not scary but it’s darned uncomfortable. I’m glad I had it done because it clued me into the fact that I have sleep apnea (now much better actually!) but I’m truly hoping that I never have to have another one again! I think I washed my hair 3 times after I got home just to get the gunk out of it. 🙁

I am pretty sure I went to the bathroom a couple of times. Most of the wires are still hooked to you, but they separate them from you and machine to go to the bathroom. It’s a pain in the hiner, but doable.
When I had mine done, it was just me and the lab assistant there the first time and the second time, it was me, one other patient and the assistant. I was more scared that the only other person besides me and the lady working was the man patient than any of the testing.
