Have you thought about Denali National Park in Alaska?  I am not sure about the weather there in March, but I had an adventure trip there in June.  We flew up, took the Alaskan railroad down to Denali, stayed inside the park, went on a two day backcountry trip with a ranger and then railroaded a few more days before coming home.  It was a great trip.

Rachel leigh’s suggestion is awesome! My fiance and I took a trip to Costa Rica in January 2006. We went hiking all over, took local buses, and backpacked around. It was super cheap. It was $5000 for the both of us, including airfare (which was $900 apiece) for a 2.5 week trip.

If you have lots of hiking/mountaineering experience, my two close friends went to Nepal. They hired sherpas and hiked many of the mountain ranges there. It was certainly not relaxing per se, but they said it was an amazing honeymoon they would never forget.

I live in British Columbia, Canada, and there are some amazing outdoor adventure opportunities to be had here as well. Lots of people honeymoon here!

I saw a lot of 7-10 day packages  to Costa Rica when we were planning our honeymoon. I wouldn’t totally eliminate an AI resort because there are several in Costa Rica that offer reasonably priced excursions. Especially with a 5k budget, you will find somethign you will like!

Have you considered Hawaii?  I haven’t been there, but we just booked our honeymoon to Kauai and Maui.  My FI isn’t one to lay on the beach, but I still wanted to go somewhere tropical.  There is a ton to do outside… hikes, camping, kayaking, water activities galore!  Ziplining will be on the top of my list there.

For more adventure, you may want to look into the Big Island too – maybe as opposed to Maui.

Good luck!

We had an amazing trip to Costa Rica, you could definatley do it in your budget.  I’ve always wanted to do a sailing adventure in the Carribean and was looking into it for our honeymoon but couldn’t figure it out.  We also had a really nice camping trip to Puerto Rico but without the camping I think Costa Rica is cheaper.  Our honeymoon was to Jamaica, which was beautiful, we went to a really rural part but since it was rural there wasn’t as many hiking trails or organized activities and it was a bit more expensive than other places.  It was a great trip for us since we were looking for something a bit more relaxing than most of our trips.
