we werent asked and didnt offer any alternative vows.... i think i even promised to obey but i set hubby right on that point soon after we got home our wedding/honeymoon :)
We are having a friend officiate so we're basically writing our own. He'll do an intro and then recite "Union" by Robert Fulughm (sp), then FI and I will say our own personal vows we wrote to each other, then our friend will end with the traditional "do you, Layla....", etc.
I always thought I'd just do the traditional vows (minus the obey crap...haha) but now that I'm actually planning my wedding I think I'm going to recite my own. My friends used to a poem that really said great things. I may do the same. I just recently found some great stuff online. There will be no memorizing though. That would go very badly.
Our friends said vows they wrote together that followed a certain format (like "I promise this, I promise this etc") so they could remember them easier but make them personal. We are planning on making our own surprise vows! I'm excited! But I don't think I will be memorizing them.
My fiance and I are planning on writing our own vows, using the format of several "I love you because ..." statements, followed by several "Because I love you, I promise to ..." declarations. I want to keep them a surprise until the actual ceremony, even though the suspense might kill me. And I haven't discussed this with him, but I also think it would be fun to do "mock" vows for the rehearsal, including silly stuff that would be appropriate for our wedding party of friends, but maybe not so appropriate for our familial guests.
My fiance and I are writing our vows. Since I know I will probably write and re-write them a thousand times before I am satisfied, I am going to start that task a couple of weeks before the wedding...less time to drive myself nuts. My fiance has had his written forever AND he says he memorized it. I am not even going to attempt that. Mine will be nicely printed on a card that I will fold around my bouquet for safekeeping until it's time to read them.
I think that we are going to write our own vows. We want to make our ceremony really unique and special to us.

Are you guys saying your own vows? I think I may just stay traditional. I can't imagine that I won't be too nervous to not screw it up!
