My gums and teeth hurt so bad last week that I went to the dentist and thought I had a cavity ... no cavity. Just stress. I told him that I just got done meeting the wedding planner for 2 1/2 hours and he was like JUST WEAR YOUR BITE GUARD at night =)

Seriously. I feel like I have to wear it all the time. All the stress is going to my jaw.

It's called TMJ. It's very common and is brought on by high levels of stress and anxiety. Mouth guards don't necessarily help. I have to wear a special mouthguard and went on heavy anti-inflammatories for awhile. It's like arthritis inflammation in your jaw. It can get incredibly painful.

I've been suffering in the last few weeks. I'm very irritable and catch myself clenching my mouth and i carry stress in my face anyways.

I went to a few dentists/doctors before they figured out it was TMJ.

I have the same problem, TMJ. It can be very painful and I too have a mouth guard to wear at nite. I dont like wearing it because it hurts my teeth for a while (hard plastic compltely covering my teeth) but it ususally feels much better in the morning. Taking some IB profen helps too, and my dentist told me asprin daily is also good to help the inflamation, but it upsets my stomach to much.

I've noticed that when im stressed, my jaw hurts the worst and it get to a point, when I can't really open it at all, so eating becomes a problem.

    So your not alone!

I also have TMJ.  I get mild jaw pain; I actually have more issues with my ear - it's like there's water in it.  My mouthguard doesn't seem to alleviate the issue.  I didn't have it too much on the honeymoon, but I'm just back to work after 2+ weeks off, and am experiencing it quite a bit :(

I have so many problems with TMJ. I hate wearing my bite guard. :(

Even the bite guard doesn't really help that much.

Whenever I concentrate, I clench my jaw. Whenever I'm stressed, I clench my jaw. Whenever I sleep, I clench my jaw. I really need to stop doing that. :p

I tend to clench my jaw when stressed or concentrating. I too went to the dentist thinking it was a cavity...I just try to actively pay attention to whether or not I'm doing it. Luckily I don't do it in my sleep!

Yay, a TMJ support group!!!  I've had it for a few years.  Man it sucks.  Sometimes I can't sing my favorite songs while I'm driving :(  And sometimes it's so bad, I get headaches from it.  My mouthguard helps some.  But it's not all better.  That's for sure.

    But thankfully, no problems today!

BOooo tmj. i wore my mouthguard last night and woke up with a pounding headache. Why I sleep so tense is beyond me.

Funny, it all was gone during the honeymoon! that should say something =]

@MsHymanRoth, i'd go see a doctor. It may have progressed up higher into some softer tissue near your ear and/or you might also have an ear infection. something is going around right now...

also swimmers ear can cause that in your ear and developes suddenly. it hapens when water gets trapped in your ear and makes you susceptible to infections after even a shower. i have to use a kleenex all the time now whenever i get water near my ear

I'm sitting here rubbing my jaw, willing it to not hurt so much as I'm reading this thread!  I have a night guard also that I SHOULD wear but I don't think it fits properly and it hurts my teeth...sometimes I even take it out while I'm sleeping and wake up in the morning and find it on the floor! Frown

Does anyone's jaw click when they bite into/chew tougher foods?

Isn't TMJ a pain?  The weeks leading up to the wedding my FI would literally wake me up and tell me to unclench my jaw or put the bite guard back in....the popping would wake him up!  It's much better now 2 months afterwards now that I"m less stressed but MAN what a literal pain....sorry you girls are in the same boat :(

Ok so I've worn my bite guard religiously ... sometimes even during the day if I'm around the house alone. It has really helped. I guess I'm clenching my jaw when I get stressed. It feels much better. If I do not wear the bite guard .. I feel like I was pounded on by a hammer in my jaw/gums

Have any of you had to wear your mouthgards 24/7?  I had to wear mine constantly from January until the end of July.  Talk about depressing and embarrassing.  It's so annoying to have people look at you weird because of this thing and your mouth.  Not to mention everyone at work asking me why I was wearing it and when i'd be done wearing it because they said I talked funny with it in.

Now I only have to wear it at night, but it's made my jaw worse.  I actually felt better when I was wearing it 24/7.  My jaw clicks and pops all the time, just sitting here it can pop.

    I hate TMJ!

When I open I can feel how my jaw is like ... uneven ... but it doesn't click or pop. I think I just take all my tension in my jaw and clench. I am wearing my bite guard any chance I get.

I cannot wear it around anyone besides my fiance or mother ... I cannot talk at all with it in and I like ... drool when I do talk haha

I have gone to pyhsio for my TMJ muscles. Acupuncture did NOT work for me, but massage & pressure points do.

Remember that the TMJ muscles are different from other muscles in your body and it will HURT LIKE THE DICKENS to do pressure point relief but if feels so much better afterward. Use your google-fu to find a visual explanation of where these muscles are on your face.

What I do is find the outer edge of the TMJ [either from inside or outside your mouth whichever you're comfortable with; personally I think going IN the mouth is 'icky' but you have a better position to find the muscle]. Press on your TMJ with your index and middle finger, or thumb [again whichever is easier], once you begin to feel like your TMJ muscle is 'tensing' you're going to have to PRESS HARDER. This is going to HURT. I cry everytime I do it, but the headache/tension relief is worth it. You continue applying pressure until the muscle 'releases.'  Repeat until the entire muscle [on both sides] has relaxed.

You can also alternate hot packs [like a hot water bottle] with ice on these muscle to soothe them if you cannot find relief from using pressure points [or if doing the pressure points is too awkward or painful].

Some people [like my FI] have a really hard time finding their TMJ, even when shown. If you have the extra $$ I'd recommend seeing a physiotherapist who knows about TMJ treatment & would be willing to show you what I described; mine did with the express intention of teaching me ways to help myself without having to pay for thereapy for the rest of my life.

oh man - I've been suffering from TMJ for a while... the bite guard cushions it, but it won't go away and it still hurts from the impact :(

i hear yoga and other relaxation exercises help...
