aww i love the sunny yellow bathroom idea. I don't think it would look bad with brass...in fact, it might lend to a nice complement. Slate blue also sounds fab for the master bedroom - for office, maybe a shade of green?
We had our place painted with Dunn Edwards Butterscotch and Antique Lace and I love it.
My friend did her bedroom in a beautiful blue (I don't know the color name) and she did Ralph Lauren's Candlight glaze over it. It's shimmers in the light and is gorgeous!
don't be afraid of color for the bedrooms! a nice sage really accents dark wood furniture. or even like a purple (i know it sounds weird, but it can be done right!)
i'm hesitant about the yellow/brass idea, it CAN be done correctly (think Spanish hacienda) but it can also look a little gaudy. Don't be too matchy matchy (like don't then get brass/gold pictures and picture frames, etc.) maybe ad a few red accents (like a photo of a tulip/poppy, a few hand towels, etc.)
as for the book shelves...white. pick a fun color for the wall, and paint the bookshelves white, with a glosser (use glosser for moldings if you have them too...REALLY makes them pop) i'm thinking pottery barn pages here, they're the BEST inspiration. lol
and lastly, CONGRATS ON THE HOUSE!!! SO EXCITING :)
oh, and ps- don't forget you CAN paint the ceilings! just use 1/3 less color (for the walls; 3/3 slate, say, for the ceilings mix 2/3 slate, 1/3 white)
I would be very hesitant about painting the bathroom yellow while it has brass fixtures. Is there any way you can change the fixtures? If not, I would consider a different color...a lot of other colors would work better with brass like taupes, greens, blues.
Congrats on the house!!!
Picking paint can be the most fun yet frustrating part! When we were fixing up our house we had like 2 days to pick paint colors, so it can be quite hard! We feel like we settled on all beautiful, neutral colors and it sounds like you are headed in the neutral direction, so if you want to check them out at Kelly Moore they are Palomino Pony, Earth Stone (came out like a gray/green/tan...it was my fav!), and Tortilla (They aren't too accurate when see you see them on screen, but it gives you an idea.)
I also LOVE reading YoungHouseLove and I love all the colors they picked for their house, so you should check them out since I think you would be interested in theirs: http://www.younghouselove.com/2007/12/watching-paint-dry/
I got a sample of the yellow I wanted and it makes the brass absolutely POP. Not what I was going for. lol, I want to mute the brass and tone it down as much as possible. I'm thinking a tan or caramel brown next... lol, SO is regretting letting me paint. I've bugged him every night this week about colors and stuff. :) I just want a nice bathroom.

We bought our first house back in September and SO is FINALLY letting me look at paint colors! I have a 3.5 week winter break (gotta love college!) and I told him I needed a project for during that time. This is the first time I've gotten to pick out colors so I'm a bit nervous! I need advice! I'm not very good at decorating...
I was thinking a sunny yellow for the bathroom but we have brass fixtures. Would yellow look horribly tacky against the brass?
I found a slate blue I love for the master bedroom but I'm at a loss for what to do with the other two bedrooms. The whole house is a creamy yellow-white, including the office (bedroom 2) and the guest room (bedroom 3). I want the bedrooms and bathrooms to be different colors since I don't plan on painting the kitchen, hallway, dining room, living room, and foyer (which are the creamy yellow-white).
And, lol, the office (bedroom 2) has a wall of shelves. Any ideas on what to do with this?
