We have a brick wall in our home. I’d like to paint it alight gray to brighten up the room (it’s currently a dark red/maroon colour). Has anyone painted brick before? Any suggestions? It’s a rough brick so I want to make sure I cover the full brick and don’t have bits of brick showing!

RunningGal: I haven’t painted brick before, but I love this example: http://www.younghouselove.com/2013/08/whitewash-in-the-hizzy/
It’s not the full coverage you’re looking for, but I think it looks way better than simply painting brick one uniform color. I’ve heard painting brick is kind of a pain, too.

Yes, we painted our brick white. It looks soooooo nice!

And it helps keep the dust at bay.

Never done it before, but wouldn’t the brick absorb a lot of paint? Might have to put a primer on it before you start or you might end up going through a lot of paint!

It’s not a hard job and will change the look of your room for sure. You will need to clean the brick and use a primer meant for brick, otherwise the brick will suck up paint like a wick, and you will get a very uneven look.

Thanks for the replies. That’s a good point about the brick absorbing the paint. I’ll have to ask at the store about a special primer that can be used on brick. I’m excited to see how this will change the appearance and brighten up the room!
