Are they both wood? If so, you shouldn't need primar. We painted our front door. It was a dark brown and we painted it a tan colour.
As for matching... I think black shutters and a red door would look sweet! Give it a pop of color :-)
You shouldn't need primer. My mom painted her door like 5 times and never used a primer!
I like the idea of black shutters and red door too! :)
I like the idea of a red door with black shutters. (And it's a pretty easy fix if you decide you don't like it, especially since you'll already have the black paint!) I would talk to your local paint store about making sure you get something that's suitable for the exterior and they can confirm whether or not you need a primer.
I LOVE a red front door and black shutters. We painted the front door of our house red this winter and will replace the shutters with black ones in the spring.

Hello, fellow nesting bees! I've introduced myself on the newlywed board but have a question for you ladies who have painted their front door or shutters before. We currently have a navy blue front door and matching shutters. I would like to paint them both black. Has anyone done this before? Did you use a special primer? Also, which would you do-matching black shutters and door or black shutters and red front door? BTW, we have beige siding on the house. Thanks for any input!
