ahmelody:  Don’t worry. You won’t be the first to have a small wedding in a large venue. Look at random wedding pics you see online. There are many weddings that show only the first few rows in the church occupied or just a couple of people in the aisle seats of the pews.

If the guests are going to be your family and friends, everyone will know each other and will mix and mingle and have a great time. There will be no awkwardness between two families who have never met.

Of the 40 people, how many like to dance normally? Most weddings I’ve attended have only around 20 people on the dance floor at any one time. If you look at the guest list and think through who will dance more than a couple of songs, you might find that a DJ is not worth it. Alternatively, those 40 people may be crazy for dancing and will dance for almost every song — you know them best.

I think you’re wedding will go just fine.

I look at lots of weddings, and from what I’ve seen, small weddings look just fine in cathedrals and a DJ is alright for 40 people.

I think the fact that these people are your family and friends, and there aren’t unknown people there, will work out. The atmosphere may be much more lively than you expect, and the dancing and celebrating aren’t likely to be lacking.
