I am doing a similar thing. Hanging paper lanterns inside the tent. I'm considering the sizes between 8-12 inches. I guess it depends on how high the ceiling/cover is. I figure, the larger they are, the less i have to hang, but I don't want them bumping people in the head. I think 12in. will be the max size I will consider.
i bought an 8 and a 12 but they are really small so i decided to go with the 16 and 18... my advice for you is to buy one of different sizes so you can see them before you decided to buy.
For my wedding last month, I used 24", 20", 16", and 10" paper lanterns purchased from Jadetime.com. I found that the 8" paper lanterns were too small if the venue is medium to large size. I used all different sizes because it gave that spacial look. Also, I hung my lanterns at different heights, which gave that 3D effect.

We used 9" x 8" battery-operated lanterns, plus 10" and 18" round lanterns. Pictures and information on how we did the lighting can be found at this link.
I used multiple version of larger lanterns, vs the smaller ones. The 8" & 10" are quite small. So I had sizes ranging from 14", 16", 18" 22" and 24"

Hi ladies,
I think I'm going to decorate my ceremony space with paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling (it's a covered outdoor patio). What size lanterns do people tend to use? I have no sense of scale. Thanks in advance!
