I was really nervous about getting the length adjusted on my gown too. Especially since I had to explain to my seamstress what a french bustle was! BUT, it turned out FABULOUS. My mom who's also a seamstress complimented the tailor's work and how great it looked. I'm sure it will be fine. (:
maybe you want to tell her to not cut off the excess fabric that's being taken in? then, you can go in and try the dress; if you think it's too short, she can still put it back down.
It will be a heck of a lot easier for you if the dress is *just* above the floor. It will help prevent tripping and ease dancing. That said, if you want it to touch the floor, by all means, tell your seamstress. And yes, it's standard to hem the train at the same time as the dress because otherwise there will won't be a seamless (no pun intended) transition between the front and back of the dress.
I'm having this same problem! I went to get my dress altered last Friday, and ever since I left my dress there, I've been freaking out! I'm not supposed to pick up my dress until 2 days before the wedding, and I'm afraid I'm going to hate it and that there won't be enough time to fix it. :-(
It is standard to have the dress hemmed above the floor, which really surprised me as well. My seamstress had me walk in the dress, and if the dress is too long (I'm wearing a hoop skirt under my dress) it will actually bend under the hoop and you risk stepping on it. I imagine it's the same even if you aren't wearing a hoop.
I also agree with TingTing about calling and having her keep the excess fabric.

I have just taken my dress to a shop to be hemmed. She put her finger on the floor and pinned the dress just above that so I won't trip it. Is this a fine length? Or should the dress be touching the floor???
I also have a small train at the back of the dress. She said she would hem it all the way around therefore taking some in on the train as well. Is this standard? I had a previous opinion that you could just hem the front of the dress to the side seams? But then if I don't do the back, will that still get under foot?
Probably stressing about nothing. She's a professional, I am just paranoid because I only have one dress and want it to be perfect! Can't change my mind once it's cut!! Any feedback or experiences to share would be great! I've just dropped it off today, it will take a couple of weeks so I have time to call back and change my mind if I want to.
My dress is Carla Zampatti off-the-rack from Myer, bargain at less than half the original price, it's all polyester (sample stock).
