I’m pretty sure shredded cheddar cheese that you find at most Mexican places is totally fine! For the record, back when I was pregnant in the dark ages of 2004 I ate cold cuts and drank a cup of coffee every day 😉 Don’t take that the wrong way because I remember how it feels to worry about everything you do and eat when you are pregnant, you are already a great mom! But try not to worry too much 🙂

I’m pretty sure this only applies to soft cheeses such as Brie. Shredded Mexican blends, cheddar, and cotija cheese are all hard cheese 🙂 If you can’t eat cheese when PG then I will be totally screwed! 🙂

Shredded cheese should be fine.  Just think of all the healthy babies that were born back in the day when SMOKING and DRINKING were considered safe!  I am neurotic about what I eat too and follow some strict rules, but I eat  shredded and clock cheese like a mo-fo.  I’d ask your doctor for a detailed list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to eating.  I once found an article on the internet that said not to eat green vegetables…. What?? +)

@tnbellebee:  Cotija cheese is “mexican” cheese so that’s probably what it was. Which comes as a hard brick. There might be others but as you said I’d stop asking Dr Google 😉

@tnbellebee:  I understand your paranoia (I am paranoid by nature), but women have been having babies for thousdands of years. A bit of cheese or some peanut butter won’t harm the baby. Experts change their mind on what’s good and bad all the time.

I agree with PP, I wouldn’t worry about it for a minute. You can’t live your life in fear, that being said shredded cheese is probably 100% okay. If I’m concerned about eating something I’ll probably nuke it first and forget about it.

My dr told me that as long as it’s pasteurized, you’re good to go!  I just try to read the labels on any cheese that I eat, and I only order stuff that I know is probably ok at restaurants (so no weird cheeses lol).

FWIW, I asked once at a restaurant if the cheese was pasteurized and the manager came out to tell me that I don’t have to ask at restaurants because it is required by law that all cheeses served in restaurants in the USA are pasteurized.

Also this, from an article:

All cheese purchased legally in the United State must either be made from pasteurized milk or raw milk that has been aged for 60 days, said Steve Fuller of the state Health Department food safety program.

From what I always hear, if you have already eaten one of the “no-no” foods, don’t fret over it, just don’t do it again. 🙂 If you have eaten at that restaurant lots of times before and eaten the cheese, you are probably fine.

Don’t worry, you will be fine. Cheese is great for you and as PP have said, all cheese sold in the US in fine.
