I just looked up all of th agencies that I need ot notify about my name change. My Social Security card came in the mail yesterday. I got a passport years ago and in order to change my name on it...I have to pay AGAIN!! I think that is really unfair. I just needed to vent!

Tell me about it! It's the reason I haven't changed my passport over yet. Just entirely too much hassle right now and I'm not going out of the country for a bit!

@PrncssDva: When you change your name on your passport, they renew it again for you so it's good for longer.

If you change your name within one year of getting/renewing your passport, the name change is free.

It's just the same as if you have to get a new drivers license because you have a new street address, but at least they "renew" the document in the process so it's good for longer.

@2PeasinaPod: Me either. I just wanted it out of the way.

@KatNYC2011: You know I did see renew on there. I guess that does make it better. I Just didn't expect to have to pay, lol. I didn't think that it would be renewed either. It says that you have to go get the 2 passport pictures all over again too.

Can you not change your name on your passport and use it until it expires? I just got my passport but will put off my name change if it means I have to pay the $135 again!

@mishelleez: You don't have to pay up to one year of getting one, so you're fine.

I have had mine for more than a year, so it's not free for me.

@mishelleez: If your within 1 year of getting it, then there is no charge.

You can continue to use your old passport until it expires (I think) but that means you'd have to book all tickets under your maiden name and probably keep at least one credit card in your maiden name so you have ID to back it up.

I was so bummed... the price for new passports went up this year on July 13.  And we got married on July 9th.  There was no way I could get the marriage certificate to them before the 13th, so I was stuck paying the extra (30? 50?  I forget how much it went up.)  My old one was from 2007, so I had to pay.  Didn't want to travel under my maiden name for another seven years....

@mak418: wow, american passports are good for 10 years? They are only good for 5 in Canada. I'm just going to continue using my maiden name on my passport until I have to renew it (1.5 years). Because I am only assuming my hubby's name, my birth certificate will remain unchanged, I've been told that will be sufficient. I'll probably leave one credit card in my maiden name just to be safe. Everything else will be changed as soon as I get the marriage certificate. Once I renew my passport, I'll switch everything over to my new name.

the guy at the post office told me that if i didnt want to pay to get a new one, i could use my old one and just bring a copy of my marriage license, so i plan on doing that!

@awakemysoul: Yep, and we can renew and stuff at any consulate or embassy, anywhere in the world. You guys have to go home to do that stuff, don't you?
