wow-- thank you SO much for this update!! I was totally wondering what I was going to do about this and was sad it was going to cost me extra money. My passport expires November 2010 and I planned to be married January 2011. I didn't want to let my passport expire because we'll probably need it for our honeymoon, but I hated the idea of having to pay for two new passports within a year (the renewal, and a new one with name change). Great to know!!
I'm in the same situation, need to renew and then name change 7 months later somehow I'm willing to go through the process twice as long as I don't have to pay both times.
Sounds right to me, when I changed my name on mine I didn't have to pay either.
Thanks for the update! Both my fiance's and mine expire in Jan 2011. Guess I'll be getting mine renewed for free! YAY!
Thank you so much for posting!!! I just started the name change process and was wondering about my passport.
yay! That's awesome! I just bought mine last August-about 6 months before I knew we were going to get married! That's awesome that I can get a new one for free!! Thanks for sharing!
That's amazing because I only have about 2 years or so left on mine as it is! I'm also running out of space :-) Good to know!
@allisonc - i think it's just a new one with your name for free, not renewal for free.
Hold on, hold on....I just looked it up and it says IF you've been issued a passport in the last YEAR, then you can have your name changed free of charge...however If you've had your passport for MORE THAN ONE YEAR, you still have to pay to change your name. :(

Yeah looks like you only get a free name change if your passport was issued less than a year ago. No fun.
oohhh I thought I could renew before the deadline and pull it off.
Although that is still interesting - it means we could reasonably discuss honeymoon trips to Africa again - I kind of killed Botswana as a destination b/c you need a passport valid w/i 6 months of your arrival, and I told fiance I wouldn't pay for a passport twice - a new one, then one with my new name. Now I could renew soonish, get the passport, go on the honeymoon with reservations in my maiden name, and come home and switch for free. So while it's not the same a FREE PASSPORT it could at least help with our travel plans. Cool :D
Yeah it is helpful for the people who just got their passport but not people like me who have had it for a long time. Didn't expect the government to be that nice though since I had to pay to get a new drivers license too even though it was only a year old.
This saves me so much time. Mine just got ruined a few days ago, and I have to have it for work. So, since I'm changing my name anyway, I can get a replacement. Thanks for the announcement!!
Thanks for letting us know. I don't think this effects me because I think my passport will expire a few months after I get married... so I'll have to get a new one anyway.
Thanks!
Dear Canada:
you should do this too, instead of making me 100% re-apply as if i never had one.
love Vistagirl
I couldn't figure out the actual fee on their site though. Can anyone else?
I just filled out the app online and it told me the fees. It was $70 with free shipping. My passport is 4 years old.

FYI: If you change your name when you get married, you have one year to get a new passport free of charge.
I had heard conflicting information on changing your name on your passport and associated fees and since I have to renew mine in March, I just called the passport office. Hope this saves someone else the hassle of calling until you can get through, it took me 5 phone calls to finally get a person 10 minutes before the office closed for the day.
