So. I booked my honeymoon last minute. We were waiting to make sure we could AFFORD it. I went to the post office that same day, June 12, to order my replacement passport, I had lost my wallet the week of the wedding and had been using my passport as ID and, yes I lost that the day after my wedding UGH. So my last passport had been issued a year ago and I still had the photos for that one and reused the photo.
I got a letter saying the photo was not current enough. I called the hotline and tried to reason, this photo was approved a year ago and passports are valid for 10 years…why do I have to take a new one? The lady said “They don’t feel it’s current enough.” ok so I go straight to the same place I took my last photo. Sure I have greasy hair but I had just enough time to add a little makeup to look ok for the picture.
The place was closed but the girl was nice enough to do my picture quickly…except that she says I need to tuck my hair behind my ears.
My ears aren’t big but they do stick out. Um? Is she messing with me? Is this chick just trying to get me to take a terrible photo? I grabbed the letter I was sent to read her the specifications. It doesn’t say both ears must be showing anywhere. She tells me (very annoyed) that she just had someone come back to re take photos because her photo was rejected since both ears were not showing.
I called the hotline again and they said my ears could be covered by my hair. She shakes her head and says “They’re wrong.” I took a semi decent picture ears KINDA showing. She says it will be rejected. I am totally freaking out, but trying to remain calm. I paid extra for the expidited processing but yikes 14 days? has anyone ever had their photo rejected for their ears not showing?

I’ve never heard of this, but if I wanted my passport in a hurry I’d just take the damn picture the way I was directed to avoid hassle!

I went to a fed ex office to have my passport pics taken, and they told me the same thing! They also told me I couldn’t smile with my teeth showing! Really odd, but I kinda followed their instructions (my teeth were showing a little bit and my ears definitely are somewhat hidden). Anyway, mine got approved and sent back to me no problem! Im sure yours will be fine!

I’ve taken passport photos before for visas and stuff (trust me, this occurs pretty damn often), always:
smiles allowed, but no teeth
just do what they tell you, stop questioning it if you want to get your passport in time.

I was told no smiles as well. This chick was saying if there was even a shadow cast by my hair over my ears it would be rejected. Even IF it is approved i have 14 days ( 12 if you dont count the two Sundays mail isn’t delivered) to get my passport. I am doing some serious meditation and breathing techniques whenever I think about it. I got it mailed out the same day I got my letter so it’s outta my hands now!
I was just wondering if anyone had ever got a photo rejected for there being a shadow cast over the ears.

@strawbs: lol! you would think i would have just done so right? I played with my hair for about 2 whole minutes to try to get it to look natural with the ears exposed! I did manage but with a slight shadow over one ear.

My mom was telling me this the other day actually. Back in the day, they required your ears to show. But now they definitely do not. So don’t worry about it!

I am smiling in my passport photo (with teeth) and my ears are copletely hidden by my hair, and I’ve never had an issue. My passport was last renewed in 2008 – and so unless the rules have changed since then, I don’t think you should really worry about it.

If this is such an urgent issue I can’t believe you would argue over something like that. Who cares what you look like??? No one ever sees it. I personally would always take the advice of someone who does things professionally.

Weird. I smiled with teeth showing and my ears were covered, got my passport in no time. Good luck!

Even though you’ll probably be fine, I would have listened to her….since you’re leaving in 14 days. For the record, I have a huge smile (teeth showing) and my ears are hidden behind my hair. I just renewed my passport in June (sent it in the beginning of June and received it in late June).

I have a normal passport, official and visa, and i’ve never had to show my ears and i’m smiling with teeth showing in all my pictures.

I wasn’t allowed to smile and my hair was already up. I can’t help you. 🙁

re: using your old photo – in the UK at least it is illegal to use a photo more than six months old. They will have your old one on record, so it’s easy to work out. My Dad had two passports for business, renewed 12 months apart, the passport office contacted him when they realised he’d used the same photo and told him that both would be invalid if he didn’t get it renewed (at his expense) with an up to date photo.
Have fun on your honeymoon!

I have NEVER heard this. It sounds like a joke that the passport photographers must be playing on their customers or something. This cannot be real. Ears? Really?
