Paying wedding expenses with a rewards Visa?

Most of our vendors didn’t accept credit cards without paying a large fee (I think it was 5% of the cost, and with the caterer, that was a huge amount).

I think you’re out of luck on this.  Sorry!

No, most places would not accept a credit card without charging extra fees.  Not worth it.

I haven’t had an issue yet with any vendor not accepting a credit card (I love the miles so FI and I put pretty much everything on credit cards then pay them off in full immediately, it’s also a great way to keep a very high credit score, so win/win).  I’m in a major city though and my wedding/reception is at a high-end hotel, so maybe that has something to do with it since I’m not hiring any “outside” caterers?

That’s too bad.  We did this with our Southwest credit card and earned a bunch of points for flights.  I live in a major city, though, so all of our vendors (except the violinist and DOC) accepted credit cards.  I hope you figure something out!

@sparky18:  Being practical here, I get 1% reward on my card, but vendors/venue would add 3% to 5% fees to my bill if I paid by credit instead of cash or cheque. It’s not worth it, unless your reward card has a higher reward percentage.

Nope, they don’t want to pay the fees associated with the card.  if they do accept it, they usually charge a 3% fee to offset their cost, which negates your benefits.  We just charged whatever we could, and forked over a cashiers check for the rest.

We paid for almost everything with a rewards card! The only place that wouldn’t take it was the Church (we had to pay in cash), and the reception venue (which had to be a check).

That sucks!  I didn’t plan on using my rewards for anything, so I wasn’t counting on it.  But a lot of vendors took credit cards.  My venue, caterer, and photographer did, and they were my biggest expenses!  So that was nice.  But I didn’t put everything on there, I had to use cash/check for my makeup/hair ($800) and photobooth/DJ.

I don’t think there’s a way to get around it, sorry.

@sparky18:  Hmm, if the don’t take Visa then they probably take nothing! Do they take checks written from credit cards?  I get these all the time to do balance transfers, but I’ve never actually used it.

If not, I would forgo the PayPal idea and just try to forget about all the potential points!

Luckily all aspects of our wedding took a CC and it was even in Canada (we are in the US).

That’s too bad, our venue took cards but they were also a restaurant. If they don’t take cards though, they don’t take cards. Not a lot you can do about it.

All of my vendors took my credit card except my DJ, flowers lady and make up lady.  I did the same thing with using a points card so in the end it did pay for plane fare for our honeymoon.

All of my vendors take credit cards. We haven’t made any credit card payments for anything except for our last payment to the venue will be on credit since it comes with a perk- we get our deposit back wiithin a couple days as opposed to waiting a couple weeks for a check to be cut.

@sparky18:  Most of mine wouldn’t accept a credit card. I did the same thing to get points for items like jewelry, my dress, etc. But venues, DJ, etc. wouldn’t take them. My photographer would, but I had to pay an additional $100 which there was no way I was willing to do. Doesn’t hurt to ask about Paypal, but be prepared to have them say no. It’s still a good idea even if you can’t put everything on it! I opened up a new one with a bonus so got a bunch of money back just for spending a ton in the first couple months. Score? lol
