To All the Pear Shaped Brides:

What do you think of mermaid/trumpet style dresses for pear shapes?  Would you wear one?

I think I'm a pear shaped. I'm small up top and carry most of my weight in my bottom half. I am going to wear a mermaid dress. I love my big behind! I don't want to hide it!

This is my dress and I am definitely going to get it altered to be a trumpet! I am definitely pear shaped and all the trumpet dresses I tried on I just loved.

My chest is definitely a lot smaller than my hips/thighs but i have broad shoulders.  I thought the straps on my dress help to balance out my body so it looks more hour glass shaped and less pear

@FutureMrsTimmins:Thanks for the response! Me too!!!!  I have been talking to a dress maker who says that curves make a mermaid dress look very nice.  All of the magazines try to put us in a-line dresses, which I hate!

i'm a chubby pear (~10 and 36C on top and ~14 on bottom...when i was skinny i was a 4/34B and 8 on bottom), and i plan on wearing a trumpet/fit-and-flare gown.  i haven't found it yet, but i've already tried some on and with the right draping and accents they're SUPER flattering.  strapless, even!  i say rock it.  the one thing i wouldn't do is the abrupt, wrapped in shrink-wrap 3/4 of the way to the knees and then mini-ballgown mermaid style...i feel like that will accent how big the butt is, lol.

I would have definitely chosen a mermaid dress if for not my opinionated groom telling me did not like that style. Rock your body if you feel beautiful there is NO way you can't look beautiful!!

    This is my dream mermaid.

    Lazaro..of course :)

I'm a pear shape, and I LOVE my trumpet dress! I tried on huge ballgowns, and I just did not think they did anything for my figure. I think people with hourglass figures/hips look best in trumpet/mermaid personally.

@nickie362:  if you love it, rock it!  who am i to discourage you?  lol.  i think it might be a personal hangup for me that i just don't like that style mermaid, so i've justified not liking it by saying it looks bad on my body type.  and even if it does look bad on MY body type, not all pears are created equal!

I LOVE mermaid styles, and I LOVE women who rock their curves!!!

If it is what sings to you, then go for it! Don't look back!

I have a very smallish chest and larger hips, and I just love dresses that hug my hips! My only prerequisite is that I can walk in the dress, without making tiny toddler steps LOL!!

I'd definitely wear a mermaid!  And my behind is 1-2 sizes bigger than my upper half.  I definitely did not think that mermaid/trumpet style dresses would be flattering till I tried some on... amazing!!  Loved them!

My destination wedding dress has a dropped waist and very full skirt, but my at home reception dress will most likely be a mermaid.  :o)

I'd definitely wear a mermaid! I wore a short dress with a very fitted skirt and rocked the hell out of it. I don't care if people say pear-shaped women should never wear such things. Celebrate the curves!

I didn't think you were trying to discourage me-I just thought that was funny. Wink It will all come down to trying it on anyway.  That is the part I am most anxious about!  The model is small and it looks nice on her.  Just worried how it will look on me.  I still have some time-I am working on trying to be a smaller pear-wish me luck!!!!

I AM A PLUS SIZE HOURGLASS/PEAR SHAPED BRIDE TO BE... AGAIN (RENEWING VOWS).  I HAVE FOUND THAT WEARING LOOSE DRESSES MAKES A BIG PERSON LOOK EVEN BIGGER.  SINCE I CAN'T GET RID OF MY HIPS/BUTT, I AM GOING TO ACCENT THEM. :-)  MY DRESS IS RUCHED FITTING PASSED THE THIGHS.  CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT AFTER THE SEAMSTRESS FINISHES IT.  ORDERED ONLINE AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS BEEN GREAT!  WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED. I HAVE LOST ALMOST 20 POUNDS AND MY BUTT AND HIPS HAVE NOT GONE ANYWHERE.

LOve the fit and flare! I am for sure a pear, the dress wasnt pressed and really wish it went up higher to help-out my long torso. But love the lace, it was a pretty dress!

I am definitely a pear shape and I am going to rock a mermaid dress. I have curves and I am not going to hide them, they make me look womanly and my fiance loves that about me! So, lets not conform to A lines only!

the sample of the fit-and-flare gown i ordered...although i might look better in it because it was too small and might be holding in some of the massiveness of my *ahem* lower half.

I personally couldn't do it - I am way too self-concious for anything form-fitted in that area BUT it's not because I dont' think it looks great. If you love the dress AND your curves - why hide them?

PS. Juliapotpie - LOVE that dress. It looks amazing on you.

I personally felt like it brought too much attention to my hips so I personally wouldn't wear a mermaid/trumpet. However, I am starting to wish I had given a bit more love to a fit and flare. Oh well.
