We are planning our Pennsylvania wedding from Colorado. I have just started a new job and unfortunately will not have the vacation time to fly back east a month before our wedding and again for the wedding. We will be able to be home 1 week before the wedding.
With the 3 day waiting period pennsylvania has applied to their marriage certificates, will we be able to definitely pick up the certificate after 3 days from applying, or could it take longer? 3 days after will take us to the day before our rehearsal dinner, but this is cutting it very close!
Have any of you helpful bees experienced longer than 3 days waiting period?
I see on the Mercer county website we can write a letter asking for the 3 day waiting period to be waived if we can offer a strong enough reason. I’m not sure if our reason is strong enough or not, but having this wait waived would certainly be helpful!
I’d love to hear any thought your advice you have!

I don’t know too much about the legal stuff in this aspect, but the worst that Penn. can say is no, that’s not a good enough reason, right? Might be worth trying. Worst case scenario, you are busier on the date of your rehearsal dinner than you were expecting, right?

This is from the Allegheny County website but it sounds like all of PA wedding license law is the same:
Pennsylvania law requires a three (3) day waiting period between the date applicants apply for a Marriage License and when the license may be issued. If applying on Monday, the license will be ready on Thursday. If applying on Tuesday, the license will be ready on Friday. If applying on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, the license will be ready on Monday.
(not my bolding)
It sounds pretty similar to Minnesota’s marriage license law which is where we were married. We cut it really close getting our license and with the waiting period. You can also apply online. Whatever you do, when they ask if you’d like it mailed to you, do not say yes! Go pick it up, if you have it mailed to you it’ll be too late. Google ‘Mercer county pennsylvania marriage licence’ and you should get specific answers for their policies. (Assuming you’ll be getting your license in Mercer Co.?)
Hope that was some help! 😉

@Megnolia: We have a similar problem that’s causing us a huge headache, since we’re visiting PA for a very short time from Korea, and won’t be in any one town for 3 business days at a time. No idea how we’re gonna handle this. Currently in progress inquiring about whether we can show up to apply but have someone else pick it up, or have it mailed or something.
I’ve heard some counties can issue you the license right away, and it simply doesn’t become valid for 3 days (even though its in your posession.) But you’ll definitely have to call the office you’ll actually be in as it varies from county to county.

What a challenge bebealways! Holy cow! Our plan b was to have a mini courthouse wedding in colorado, and not tell our guests, just the parents, and the actual wedding ceremony and reception as planned in August. We’d prefer to reserve the actual marriage for our scheduled day, but we could avoid the last minute drama having the courthouse wedding now.
maybe something like this could be considered?
