So.. I’ve had my heart set on peonies as my wedding flower and yesterday a florist told me that there’s no way she can get Peonies in August! I was heartbroken!
My wedding is August 6th, early August in Massachusetts, any ideas?

What about ranunculus? I think they are kinda peonyish?

Hmm, seems odd. You can usually get anything with a price tag. I say don’t compromise and find a florist that will work with you. We picked a date in May specifically for peony season because I’m obsessed with them, but I don’t think August is too out of the ballpark to at least try?
But, garden roses do have a very similar look to peonies when fully open. Try those if all else fails!

My wedding is in September and I was told the same thing. We’re doing garden roses as pictured below. Ranunculus is also a good choice for a vintage-looking flower.

Thanks so much girls! I’ll keep those in mind for the next florist I meet with!

You can order them online from a wholesaler. They will be expensive though since it’s a seasonal flower. Check out fiftyflowers.com

you can definitely get them. they’ll be really expensive, because they’re expensive even when they’re in season. i would ask another florist – there’s no reason you wouldn’t be able to get them for a fee!

My wedding was August 1st and I was told definitely no peonies for my wedding. 🙁

I also think that you would be able to get them but at an increased rate! I was going to go with Peonies in July and my florist told me they would cost a lot more and I would need a replacement bouquet for the ceremony since they would be wilted after our pictures.
She also recommended going with Old Garden Roses so that is what I am doing. I even brought in a few pictures that I liked to show her and half were old garden roses and I didn’t know the difference.

I think the season for peonies is around May to June. My wedding is going to be June 18, and my florist said that peonies are great around that time. So I guess if your wedding is July or after… maybe a bit harder to get peonies

i really wanted peonies too in my august wedding, but i also loved my florist who was a big believer in seasonal and local flowers. my boquet was heavy on cabbage roses and zinnias
here’s one of my bridesmaids–

On reason I chose June was so I could have peonies as they are only available May and June. I presume they don’t bud or something(?)

Hi Bees – I used to be a wholesale flower shipper.
You cannot get peonies in August b/c peonies are a type of flower that need a cold winter to bloom in spring – and generally late spring (april/may/early june-maybe july sometimes).
It is impossible to ship peonies from Holland – there is not a secondary season for this type of flower. Lily of the Valley and Gardenias can be able but you’ll pay a premium.
Any wholesaler or florist who says they can get peonies in August is smoking crack. Seriously delusion going on if that is the case 🙂
Additionally – ranunculas are not on season in August. You might be able to get them via Ecuador/florida shipper/local wholesaler/your florist.
August is a great time to get married as there are many many local seasonal flowers available -especially Massachusetts. Think hybrid delphinium, foxglove, cosmos, dusty miller, dahlias, zinnias, and stock.

@sfchick: Not doubting your knowledge at all, it seems like you have a ton of experience, but I just wanted to clarify that it is possible. My sister was married in October and her florist tracked down peonies for her bouquet. She paid an arm and a leg, but she had them so it sure is possible!

@MrsMaine: Do you know if they had them shipped from Holland?
