i've always wondered if people at the checkout of stores pay attention to what you buy, or if they just don't really care. now i know my answer!

i went to the grocery store yesturday and along with lots of other stuff i purchased a pregnancy test. i had to go back to the store again today and the lady said, "weren't you here yesturday? did you take the test? what was the result?!"

really? i haven't told my parents the result yet but you think i'm going to tell you?

anyone else have to deal with nosy strangers?

Wow! That is really nosy and rude! That is something that is private and personal and she really shouldn't ask you. I only had someone say something to me once about what I was buying and that is because I bought beer, batteries, spray paint, lighter fluid, some snacks, and toilet paper. Kind of an odd combo of things!

Oh! And I hope your test turned out the way you wanted it too! :)

People can be so ignorant! Try to let it roll off your back...and hope the test was what you wanted it to be too!!

Is it bad if I admit that now I want to know the result of your test?? Embarassed I can't help myself and my nosiness.  But I certainly would not have asked if I were her and I would have been shocked if I were you and the check out girl asked something like that.  I'm actually a super open person with my friends.... but come on lady, I don't know you, you don't need the details of what's going on with my uterus.

They are trained to not comment on purchases unless you do.  I'd tell a manager.

Wow, I'm nosy, but not that nosy. As the cashier, maybe I would have made a mental note, but not to the person. That is really rude and presumptuous. Who said the pregnancy test was for you anyway.

I'm curious, though. What was your reaction? Did you say anything back?

Most checkers only notice weird items, not everything you purchase. It does surprise me that she asked, but I don't find it all that offensive. And checkers are not going to get in trouble for asking questions like that. She probably wanted to live vicariously through your excitement.

Yeah I get a bit paranoid when I purchase certain items, but they aren't really supposed to be commenting on it.  I'd either brush it off, avoid them the next time you're in the store, or call the manager and complain.

@moose1209. it was a very very very faint line. everything i've read and heard says any line at all no matter how faint is a yes, but i'm not letting myself get too excited b/c it's still early and i just want to wait to have it confirmed by a doctor.

@rayrayfurious. i just told her i didn't know yet. she caught me by surprise!

Wow, that's so terrible!  The closest I ever came to something like this was about 6 or so months ago... I purchased my first ever pregnancy test when my period was late, and the cashier was fine, but the woman behind me started pointing and laughing! I was incredulous.  And I hate to admit it, but I started blushing deep red.  Mind you, she was asian and I don't think she could speak much English, but still - how rude, no matter what culture you're from!

And it was negative, just in case anyone's wondering! :-)

I had a clerk do something like that once - I was buying something for a baby, and he asked if it was for me and said congrats.  I was so shocked that anyone would comment on my purchases especially at a pharmacy! That is why whenever I have more personal stuff to buy I always pay at the pharmacy counter where I know the staff are better trained.

    And Congrats!!!!!!

    thanks everyone!

so i went to the store again today (yes, that's 3 days in a row) and i made sure to avoid the lady's line. however i forgot what the bagger looked like, and of course i ended up in her line! she again asked me if i knew anything, and then proceeded to scream to her friend (the original lady who asked me), pointed to me, and told her that i didn't have any news. it's officially time to go to a different grocery store.

Good Lord... these people are ridiculous.  Absolutely call the manager and complain.  Asking you is bad enough but to yell your personal business across the store is completely unacceptable.

And more importantly.. CONGRATS!!  I don't think those faint lines just show up on their own ; )

Ok, the first one I wouldn't have been too offended but what happened at the third trip is completely inappropriate!!  I can't believe someone would do that!

Seriously I would tell a manager about both the bagger and the cashier. It seems harsh but that it a complete and utter invasion of privacy and not acceptable at any store. If the manager didn't say anything about it I would call their corporate office. How frustrating.

Congrats! And I would definately speak to a manager...they have no right to make this a public issue. What if somebody you know (boss, family, anyone!) was near by and heard them?? They should not say anything aloud!  Just think what else they could be saying..."Hey Bob, this guy is back for more hemorroid cream over here!!!"   They need to learn to be quiet! That's completely innappropriate!

Ive had a checker tell me she could tell I was a single mom with a cat because I was buying cat food, my little pony band aids and a couple tv dinners.  When in reality, the cat food was for my mom, the tv dinners were for my hubby and the bandaids were for me :).

Wow, that's so rude and inappropriate, I'd surely tell the manager about that!  Luckily for me when that time comes we have a self checkout option at my grocery store. :)

I'm sorry but that is so nosy, especially since the bagger asked you again!  They have no right to just ask you about your test results multiple times.

Uh, I would def change grocery stores and report both of them to the manager, that's annoying and semi stalkerish.

My bagger does not need to be the first to know that I'm pregnant.

One time I was at the grocery store with my sister and the cashier asked how far along I was- I was buying nothing baby related and at that time my tummy was flat and I was/am not pregnant.  I was so embarrassed.
