A headpiece and veil wouldn't be worth $500 to me, but everyone has different priorities and you have to do what's right for you. That being said, it doesn't sound like the best financial decision, but neither are weddings in general. :-)
You probably have some time to make your decision so shop around and if you still want it as badly a couple months down the line.... then it might be worth the cost to you. Good luck!
Have you tried searching for it online? You may be able to find the headpiece and veil for a discounted rate.
I'd hold off. I've now made two veils for myself for the wedding at a total cost of $17. In my veil-making class, one woman made a beautiful lace and tulle cathedral length veil that would have cost $500 anywhere she would have tried to buy it. Materials cost her $30.
I figure the hair piece is the one thing my future daughter (yeah, I know) might want to wear...so I'm paying around $200 for it. The veil she's making is very simple and inexpensive though. In my case, it's custom-made by my dress maker to match, and her hair pieces are amazing. If it weren't made to match the stones on my dress exactly or her hair pieces were not exquisite, I'd probably search around for something cheaper online.
Two words: "Etsy Alchemy." See if you can take pictures of them and then you can have them custom-made for you on Etsy. There are some amazingly talented vendors out there that would only charge you a fraction of that cost. I've had great luck with Etsy vendors and have found some great deals. Best of luck to you!

Hi Everyone -
I'm continuing my dress search and have found another one that may be "the one". I'm going back to see her on Friday. :)
I don't have pictures of this dress (couldn't even get away with it in the dressing room this time), but it is a ballgown with swarovski crystals in a band at the waist. The owner of the bridal salon placed a veil on my head that is edged in the same crystals - and (gulp) it is $275 and perfect. To top that off, she had a hair piece that also looks fantastic with it (I'm talking Cinderella perfect smiling giddy fantastic) - for $225. The hairpiece is real pearls and the swarovski crystals again.
My budget is ever expanding (was just told we have a wedding tally, not a wedding budget), and I could technically afford it, though I worry about splurging on something I'll wear for 45 minutes in this economy. Plus my job is quite trying and there are days I really really want to quit (my job is paying for the wedding more than anything right now).
So - the dress is $900, which I am ok with, but am I crazy to be considering spending $500 for two things that will sit on my head for one day? Thought I'd get some opinions before I go back and possibly splurge.
