I looked forward on my "Red" calendar (no it's not communist!) and I calculated that I'm going to be on my period for my wedding and honeymoon!  Boo!

Any advice for how to avoid the most humiliating accident ever?  (Why, oh why, is it a WHITE dress???)

I'll be in Hawaii for my honeymoon...how do I avoid looking pissed off and bloated in a bikini??

Any home remedies and advice are appreciated!!

(PS-Homeopathic pain remedy: encapsulated turmeric, works great!)

I don't know if you are on the pill or want to be on the pill, but if you are, you can talk to your gyno about doing an extended cycle.  Basically, you'll skip the placebo pills and just take three straight weeks.

If you are taking birth control pills, you can work it to skip your period.  One way to do so is to not take the inactive pills -- just start a new pack as soon as you finish the active pills.  Be sure to take the pills at the same time each day (even more careful than normal) because spotting is somewhat more likely to occur.  You should probably talk to your doctor about his or her recommendations.  The timing of your period can be managed!

@MS- keep in mind that if you are not using a hormonal method, your cycle may not stay perfectly regular with the stress leading up to the wedding.  It may be somewhat unpredictable...  The only surefire way is what Salex and Jenny Bee are suggesting.

I had the same potential issue for my geach wedding!! So I went on the pill (about 3-4 months before the wedding) and successfully avoided the red issue!

If you don't end up skipping it, look into disposable menstrual cups (Instead is the brand name)... they last twice as long as tampons, and are really more comfortable. They function basically like a diaphragm, except they hold in rather than keep out. :)

I have been on the pill for a year now, but my periods are STILL all funky. I am going to get on new stuff in the next week or two. If I am not able to skip, then I will definitely be on my period on my wedding day. Oh dear. *crosses fingers*

I'm stuck in the same predicament too. But I think going on birth control will probably go nuts with my body. I'm afraid to even start, so I think I'll just grin and bear it if I do happen to get my period that week.

I literally had the calendar out two seconds ago counting this! The wedding and mass are all clear (phew!), but it will be making an appearance at the end of our honeymoon :-(. I don't think I'm going to bother extending my pack though to avoid it, but if it fell on the actual wedding or mass day I definately would! It really is your best option. Good luck!

I'm not a huge fan of hormonal birth control...mostly because I had to be on it from the time I started (13 yrs old) until I was out of college.  Now that my body is regulating itself, I'm afraid to screw it up again by skipping placebos...(imagine if your perioud started and didn't stop...that's why I had to be on BC).  Plus BC makes me crazy...no really I get super PMS!  I'd rather be uncomfortable on the honeymoon than PMS-y.  I like this "Instead" idea, I'll check that out!

Also a coworker suggested I wear compression shorts to keep my backup pad in place...anyone try this?  Does it work?

(Stop reading now if this whole topic grosses you out...seriously...men...stop reading...)

My mom uses two tampons.  Thanks to genetics, I think that's the direction I'll have to head someday.  Hopefully only after I have kids!  Anyone else do this??

2 tampons at the same time?

I was in the period boat too on my wedding.  it ended up being managable  (thank you lord)
But i fretted for like 3months before about it and I don't take pill makes me feel wonky.  Finally i just gave in and said "whatever happens ..happens".

Mine was scheduled to hit right on the day too....I don't normally use hormonal bc but to move my period for the wedding I used it for one cycle. I had used the ring in the past and I was going use two right next to one another to "skip" a period. However, my problem on hormonal bc has always been that my period comes early on it no matter what and the spotting dragged on for weeks when I tried it once before.

So instead, I used the ring for only two weeks. In the new "ring-free" week I had a fake period and then my cycle restarted from there, now one week earlier. You should use a back-up method of contraception if you are having sex if you try this since goodness knows what it would do to the effectiveness that cycle. I have never heard of anyone else trying this but it worked for me.

Mine wasn't supposed to start until 3 weeks after the wedding but lo and behold I had a little visit on wedding day. I honestly think it was the stress of it all because it stopped about 2 days after the wedding when we were on our honeymoon. I'm glad we got to enjoy ourselves on our honeymoon and it wasn't totally ruined. I was worried about it with my dress but I didn't have any problems, thank goodness. Good luck to all of you ladies in the same spot.

I'm on OrthoTriCyclen and I've skipped periods many times on purpose. I have never had any problem with this. I just don't take the placebo pill and go straight into a new pack. Works like a charm!  If I were you I would seriously consider it. The thought of being on my honeymoon and on my period makes me shudder...such an inconvenience!

I would talk to your doctor about getting on the pill (if you aren't already) and you can start your next packet right away instead of taking (or not taking) your 'sugar' pills then you skip your period all together (which I would find scary but I know people who have done this!)

THe Moon cup or Diva cup are better than the Instead Cups.  They are not "disposable" and are not that expensive.  Get one ahead of time and practice to be sure you know how to insert & remove it prior to the wedding day.  With either cup you should be able to go a whole 10-12 hours, longer if you have lighter flow.

Oh - and I have had to do something similar to "compression" pants before to hold the backup pad in place.  I was in a musical and was on my period.  Luckily my costume had room for a pair of bike shorts under that kept everything from shifting during the performance.

There's a shot you can look into...if you're not on "the pill."

I would check with your OBGYN about it!

@ chelseamorning and others who mentioned that they always get their period before the end of the active part of their birth control -

this "breakthrough bleeding" is because the dose of estrogen in your hormonal contraceptive isn't a high enough dose. talk to your gyno about that; changing to a pill with a slightly higher estrogen dose should help.

and if you're thinking of skipping a period, do it earlier rather than later!! it took me 2-3 months to normalize after i skipped the placebos in order to line up my period properly with my wedding. additionally, you don't have to take the whole three weeks of your second pill pack. as long as you have at least 21 days of active pills in a row, you can tack on as many days/weeks as you like and you are still protected. i personally took 4 weeks (28 days) of active pills in order to shift my period a week only. granted, i intended to take the whole pack, but the breast ternderness and moodiness made me cut it short. hah.

tennisSML5, after your comment i realized i should qualify my statements so you all don't think i'm some hack coming on here and leaving random health advice. I am a medical student (and future ob/gyn, yay!) who has worked closely with one of the top physicians in Family Planning in NYC - the information i gave to you is what she has taught me, and subsequently this information is what the staff in our office give to our patients.

I will advise anyone considering skipping who needs reassurance to call their OB/GYN and discuss your options first. surely there is a certified ob/gyn on the board who can comment as well?

For those who can't avoid having their period on their big day, I highly recommend trying the Diva Cup. It is a flexible cup you use in place of tampons. Unlike the disposable cup a previous poster mentioned, the diva cup gets washed and reused, so it is a great choice for those who want to be green. I also think it's sturdier and has less of a chance of leaking that the disposable cups or tampons. I love mine, I can leave it in for 12 hours! I bought mine from Lunapads.com.

I second (third?) the Diva cup suggestion if you're not on the pill. You can put it in before your period starts, if you're expecting it within the next couple of days (unlike a tampon). So just in case you aren't quite regular enough to guess when during the day your period will arrive... that will help.

And seriously, you will save soooo much money!! I would totally recommend it for everyone. Saving money, saving the environment... it's awesome!!!

Dang it!  It took out all of my carefully place page breaks.  Let me re-post that:

Since you don't seem to be concerned about avoiding your period, I also wanted to recomend the Diva cup as a great way of dealing with it.

I've been a dedicated user for years now and I would NEVER go back.  You only need to change the diva cup 2x per day (I do it when I get up in the morning and before bed).  Leakage is basically a non issue as long as you take a little shower to "clean everything up" after you put it in.  For your wedding day I'd use a little panty liner but day to day I don't use anything.

Seriously ladies, ALL of you should be looking into this (wedding or not!).  In my experiene it is cleaner, more convenient, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly.  One cup litterally lasts you years.  How much do you spend on tampons in years!  LOTS!

And MightySapphire - tell your mom.  They make it in two sizes: 1) pre child birth, 2) post vaginal child birth.  I can't imagine using two tampons is awesome.

The one thing I would say is to try to start using it a few months before your wedding.  It is something new to get used to and the first month or two I thought it felt weird.  After a few months I became confident in how the whole thing worked and could no longer feel it.

There is also a version called the Keeper if you prefer.  I think the main difference is that the keeper is made of latex (which some people like because it's natural) while the Diva Cup is made of something else (which some people like because it doesn't cause the reactions possible with latext).  Google either term and you'll easily find an online retailer.

Sorry 1 follow up - the Diva Cup is a non disposable version of the cups December mentioned.  I've never used the Instead cups but why not go with the non disposable product?  I believe that Instead is the tampon/pad companies' try at the cup market. They sure love to make us buy disposable products!

Re DivaCup versus the disposable Instead cups, I tried Instead and it was a major FAIL for me. It was messy people, really messy, over and over again. But I was really excited about the idea. Does anyone have experience with Diva vs. Instead?

I also want to recommend the Diva Cup.  I know it may take some getting used to, but I find it well worth it.  I have been using it for several years now and love it.  No more contributing to landfills with feminine products! :)   The biggest adjustment was learning how to insert this the first time of use after that it was a breeze and I often forget I have my period.  I no longer have cramps!  (Though my cramps previously were mild)

Once I tried this I had to tell everyone I know about it.  Give it a try!
