Got two or three permanents done at a salon years ago back when “big” curly hair was the rage. Looked great when done, but then of course started to grow out. Hair had been lightened by perm. Had done a couple more times, then a stylist warned I would be damaging my hair if I continued. So I never did it again -waited for the mess to grow out. I curled hair on my own occasionally, with believe it or not, old fashioned rollers you sleep in.
Wondering if anything has improved with these permanents today. Does it still lighten hair, and can I color at the same time? Now, I’m old enough to have some gray starting, and I use those “lasts through 28 shampoos” colors that they sell in the drugstores. What happens when the perm starts to grow out? I have always preferred my hair long, so just having the permed, lightened hair cut off isn’t that easy.
Any stylists out there who could let me know if it is any better today than years ago?
