what kind of tummy control do Spanx offer? I need something that will reign in my flub the way the expensive dresses with built in corsets that I tried on did. Are there spanx out there that can do it for me, or do I need to invest in a good corset?

Would anyone be willing to post 'before' and 'after' pics of their tummy on spanx? I realize that's a REALLY personal question...

I don't have before and after pics, but I have a pair and I felt like the smoothed out my little pouch and love handles and created more of an hourglass shape... Could you go to the mall and take a clingy shirt with you, so you could try them on and see exactly what a difference they make?

:( no malls where I live and if there were, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sell Spanx!

My dress fitting is about a week after I get back to the States and then I won't see my seamstress again until the week of the wedding...... so I'm hoping to have it figured out ahead of time so I can order something to be at the house waiting for me. :)

Nordstrom's sells spanx and they have a great return policy you could order some, see how they go and then return them if your not happy?

I've had good experiences with spanx but it has a tendency to roll down on me, too. It "settles" in between rolls when I sit and unless I go tot he bathroom and fix it, it's sort of a pain.  I have a MUCH better figure in a corset. But the ties in the back would make me concerned, unless you go with the non-tie kind.

where do you buy your corsets, Ejs? (I love that that makes it sound as though you own like 15 corsets... you totally do, don't you? ;P)

I'm to cheap to spring for Spanx, so I buy a pair of control-top pantyhose and cut the legs off.  It totally works.

How tall are you?  Because I am only 5'1", which made the spanx far too big regardless of what size I got.  When I pulled them up all the way, they went to the middle of my boobs!

But I agree to get them from Nordstrom because they have a great return policy.

I recently bought some Assetts at Target (they're "cheap" Spanx), and I was surprised by how they hold you in.  It's less that they take inches off of you, and more that they smooth everything out.  For example, when I wear pants, I very often have a slight tummy bulge over the top of my pants, because, well, I am fat, but I've lost some weight, and just have a lot of excess skin there.  When I wear the Spanx, the bulge isn't there, BUT my pants don't feel any less tight or easier to button.  I find them much more helpful for general smoothing and shaping and much less for actual inches off your body reduction.

hmm.... I'm hoping to find something to help define my waist!

I've loved every corset dress I've tried on, but my cheapo custom job sure didn't come with one built in :) and I wasn't sure if it would be too much fabric inside.

Where does one go about buying a corset anyway?

oh, and @heathaah - I'm 5' 8" so I don't THINK I'll have a problem with sizing, although most of my height is in my legs.

They're great at smoothing, but they don't really give you that gorgeous nipped in look of a corset dress.  I forget, which dress did you end up picking?  (I'm assuming you've posted it already?)  I wore Spanx underneath mine, but wish I'd looked around and gotten a corset instead.  I feel like I actually have less waist definition in Spanx than I do without.  My dress was very unstructured, and I wish I'd had more "support/structure" underneath to give me a bit better curves.  I don't have a good source for you, I would just Google it or do a search on WB as I'm sure there are some threads about where to buy corsets.

Like everyone else said, they are good at making you look smooth and reducing bumps, but they don't necessarily make you look smaller. When I wear mine, my love handles and belly pooch are much smoother and less noticeable. But I don't look skinnier.

    ok - thanks everybody!

I feel like I've tried to read every corset thread since I got here, and never really found anyone come out and really say where they like to get them...

Maybe I'll do some hunting. :)

I tried on a pair at DB's when looking for shoes, and the thighs felt nice and tight, but the "food baby" was not taken care of - I felt like their pair didn't do any sucking in in the gut area, which is where I would like it.

I just bought the Spanx Slim Cognito Hi-Rise Body Smoother, which is supposed to have the most "sucking-in" power. I'm really happy with them and they are way better quality than the cheaper ones I bought at Nordstrom. They are gusseted in case you need to use the restroom and they have removable straps to attach them to your bra. Spanx has a 100% guarantee & I think htey are still doing free shipping over $50.

It depends on if you want smoothing or nipping, as above.  I think spanx/girdles only nipped in my waist 1/2" or maybe way less.  I ended up just getting a longline bra, dieting & working out.  I planned to wear the spanx w/ my longline, but it didn't really help & that combo would've been a pain for potty breaks, so longline only was good enough for me.

I have posted this a couple times before, so I apologize for the repost, but this bustier is that good: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=177029&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

Any extra weight I have is generally in my stomach, and I found spanx did nothing for me. I like this bustier because it has boning, defines my waist, and smooths.

@vonne:  I hated that bustier--I'm 5'10" and it didn't go down far enough, so it actually created stomach pooch.  Also, the seems/boning showed through clothes.

As for Spanx: I tried the spanx that go way up past the waist, the shorts ones, and they work pretty well.  I would suggest ordering one size smaller than you think to get enough control--the one my actual size didn't do a whole lot.  Target also offers the Spanx brand Assets that works just as well, but at a lower price.

I have Spanx and like them for certain things. I would say they tend to be more smoothing than cinching though, like some other bees said. They also are ok at first and get uncomfortable after a while. I've opted not to wear them on my wedding day.

As far as corsets or bustiers, I don't think you should really have a problem finding them. Nordstrom has some as well as any other nice lingerie store. They might not be quite as high tech as the ones built into a dress though. Maybe you could order a few options to be at the house waiting for when you get back and just return the ones that don't work?

@arizona bride - that's the one I've been looking at. The before and after pics on the website are astonishing!

@vonnegirl - they don't have my size :( I'm an A-cup (36A) so I need the stomach shrinking more than the bust lift. ;)

I bought some at walmart. I think I paid around 30 dollars for both. I got the high rise underwear that cover the belly and then a cami. I didnt think that they would work very well since they are from walmart but they work great. They cinch me in and smooth out my lumps and bumps. They dont roll up or down and they are very comfortable. I even got sized in my wedding dress with them on. I will check the name on them when I get home.

I tried on shapewear last week before I went dress shopping for the 1st time.  Tried on several different styles/brands, and the thing that worked the best for me was a waist cincher.  It went from under my boobs down to my hips (im short) and had little hooks all the way down.  It really pulled in my waist and smoothed out the belly pooch better than pull on spanx etc.  Got it at Macy's btw.

Try herroom.com.  They have lots of bustiers and a pretty good return policy.  I was able to order four different bustiers and then just return the ones that didn't work.

Spanx smooths very well, but did very little shaping for me. I ended up going without it on the wedding day because it was more comfortable and it didn't help with what I hoped it would have. A good waist cincher would probably have been a lot better.

I don't know anything about Spanx but I was going to get a corset from barenecessities.com but my dress back was too low so I couldn't.
