I'm trying to decide whether or not to get the HPV vaccine. I don't plan on ever being with anyone else besides my future husband, but to be safe or sorry... Ever since seeing that scary video of the cheerleader who can now only walk backwards after getting a flu vaccine, I'm a bit worried about vaccination. Did you already get the shots? Were there any side effects?
I really wouldn't worry too much about the side affects based on one video. If you are really concerned about side affects from vaccines you should do a little more research and talk with your health practicioner.
I haven't gotten it yet, and don't really plan to. I am in a similar situation with you and my nurse practioner and I decided there was no need unless our relationship status changes.
You might want to look over some of the comments in this previous post-- there were many women who have experience with the vaccine: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/cervical-cancer-vaccine-have-you-or-would-you-take-it
I don't plan on ever getting it. I'm low risk, have a needle phobia, and don't see the point in a shot that only protects against some strains of HPV that I'm likely to never develop. Other women may have horror stories, but that's their problem, and it's not for me. I'll pass on the guilt trips too. :)
I got it. I have been EXTREMELY careful in my life-- only slept with 2 guys including FI, and have already had some cervical dysplasia. My first bf cheated on me and passed it along. Not that I think FI will ever cheat on me.... but my insurance covered it, my doctor recommended it, and why refuse something that could safe my life on pride?
I got it while in college, mainly because my mother wanted me to ("just in case!"). I had no ill effects from the shot, and neither did my three roommates who got it as well.
i got it, i'm getting too old for the shots so i thought i should just go ahead and do it. i didn't have any side effects.
Oh I forgot to mention- No real side effects. My arm was a little sore at the injections site for maybe a day or two.
Me too - I was right on the fringe for age and don't plan on being w/ anyone else except future husband, but thought "what the heck?" Also work at a cancer hospital, so...yeah, it made sense to me personally to get it. It hurt a bit but otherwise no ill effects. Of course I went to Africa for JYA and had a zillion shots, so that might be why it wasn't a big deal...
I think every woman should get this.
I got mine i think when I was 23 or 24. It's a series of three shots and it's worth your peace of mind in the end.
I got it when I was in grad school, at the tail end of the age limit. I actually fought with my insurance company to try and get them to cover it, and although I was not successful, ended up being covered under a state program for women who weren't otherwise covered for it. I started dating my now FI while I was in the middle of the series. Although I hope he's the last person I ever sleep with, I'm still glad I have that protection, and I would have any daughters I have get the vaccine as well.
I am not getting it until they release some kind of long-term study on it. They did no long term testing on it and they have no idea what it's going to do to all the women who have gotten it 5-10-15 years down the road. There are plenty of instances where they have released something like this and then found out it causes something even worse than what it was supposed to prevent.
Thanks so much everyone for responding! I didn't see the previous thread on cervical cancer--thanks jhphi!
zippylef--your reasoning is exactly why i was worried about getting it. the lack of long-term studies is a bit concerning. though, my friends who have gotten it have argued that if it wasn't absolutely safe, the FDA wouldn't approve it. also the point was made: what if sometime down the road, you remarried and that person had the virus and you had no knowledge. Apparently it's not detectable in men. still undecided about this...
Insurance covered it fully, and I've already had cervical cancer once. I got it and so did my sister. No side effects at all except at the injection site, which I get from any other vaccine. Its your own personal preference, but I think its better to have the vaccine than not have it. Look over the reasons why you should get it, see how many apply to you, and then make a decision. Talk to your doctor and see what he thinks
I got it and here in Australia it was free - the government paid for it so I figured if it's free why not. I didn't have any side effects at all and wasn't concerned about it at all. I've been really careful with regards to partners and have only had 2 including my fella I'm marrying. My main reason for getting it was that I didn't want to look back in however many years and know that there was something I could have done to protect myself but didn't!
I'm 24 and my sister is 19 and my doctor recommended that both of us get it anyway because my family medical history is ummmm not too great. I'm a little bit nervous as I'm really really afraid of needles!
I haven't had a doctor say anything about it to me so I haven't gotten it yet. If a doctor said I should get it, I would but I don't think I would ask for it. I'm not really worried about the side effects, there is a risk of side effects that can be devastating with any vaccines or medicines unfortunately.
I've had 2 of the series of 3 shots(i should probably get the third but i'm a wuss with needles). there was pain at the injection site but i experienced no side effects. my mother made me get it back in highschool to be safe.
I've been brought up to avoid medical treatment when not completely necessary - I don't get flu vaccines, HPV vaccine, or anything else like that. That's just my personal opinion.
Just remember that Gardasil protects again two strains of HPV that most commonly cause cervical cancer and two strains that cause genital warts. There are dozens of strains of HPV. I think about 50% of the population has had one of the viruses at some point in their life, but most of them clear up. There is no test or vaccination (it's in the works) for men at this time. You may want to check of the CDC's website for more info or www.plannedparenthood.org for more info.
I am waaaay to old to get it, but I don't think I would if I was younger, and that's just my personal preference.
I didn't have insurance at the time, but I got it anyway. Even if you plan on being with your fiance for the rest of your life, you never really know what's going happen. Plus, there's no way for men to be tested and there's nothing (not even condoms) that can protect you. I figured that if there was a way I could protect myself from getting a disease that such a high percentage of people have, it was worth the $1000 out of pocket to get it. Better safe than sorry you have cervical cancer.
I got it because I didn't have a reason not to. After a certain age they won't give it to you. Maybe 25?
JoJoBananas, the highest priority is for women under 25, because it is assumed that most women over that age already have the virus. However, even if you already have one variant of the virus, the shot will protect you against others.
I've never gotten it, because a) it wasn't even invented until I was already several years into a long-term monogamous relationship, and b) I've had a hysterectomy, so I'm no longer concerned about cervical cancer. I would definitely get it if I still had a cervix. Unfortunately, not only is the virus typically undetectable in men, but it hangs around forever, so you can catch it years or decades after he was first exposed to it.
I got it! And not to scare you, but the shot... that $H!T BURNS! My arm was burning for about 10 minutes afterwards and NOTHING made it feel better. But my mom felt it was important.
i opted out of it. i asked my doc about it but she said i was at low risk so it wasn't necessary.
I got it, figured why not? I got just in time for my insurance to cover it too since the cut off is 27 I think. I gotta say this one hurts like hell though. Not so much the prick, but it's almost like you feel the liquid burn a bit once it's in there. It's weird, but it's quick. Other than that no side effects.
I got it. My doctor stressed that it's a good preventative even if you will just be with one person for the rest of your life (and who's to guarantee that? unfortunately, anything could happen.) so I went ahead and got it. Honestly, besides a stiff arm, I didn't have any side effects. It wasn't too painful or anything, either.
I probably wouldn't get it now that I'm engaged, but I did get it right before I turned 26 (as soon as it was on the market). I had absolutely no side effects beside a sore spot from the needle prick. I would absolutely recommend getting it for anyone who is single and I would also definitely have my daughter get it (when I have one). Any precaution against common forms of cancer I think is smart - you never know exactly what will happen in life.
It's the only vaccine in the world for cancer!!! I would have gotten it if I was in the age range, but I was too old by the time it came out :(
The only person in this world we truly have control over is ourselves, and I think it's really wise to offer yourself any protection from the twists and turns of life that you may not have any control over.
I got it when I was 20 and in college. No side effects whatsoever and I believe in protecting myself from everything I can. There will always be risks, but with that comes a greater benefit IMO
Even though I'm low risk as well, I got it and I'm glad that I did. Honestly for me the pain was completely minimal and I had no side effects.
I got it before I met FI b/c my insurance covered it and even though I didn't sleep around my Dr. suggested getting it just incase a future partner would unknowingly pass it to me. So I got it. It didn't hurt and I had no side effects.
I got it. My insurance covered it, my long time dr said I should I believe in being safe, not sorry. My arm was sore for a few min after but all and all it wasn't bad at all!
I got the shot series right when it first came out and I didn't have any side effects at all.
<3
I clicked "no" on the poll accidentally, for some reason, I was thinking it was H1N1. I have had the first two shots of HPV and I get my last one in April. No side effects, and my insurance covered all of it.
I got it.. the great thing is (and I know this because I work for an OBGYN) the gardasil protects againt 6 high risk strains that can cause cervical cancer. That other cool thing is even if you have one of the 5 strains, getting the shot will protect you against the others you dont have. It also protects against genital warts (a lot of people dont know this).
Let me be frank with you.. 80% of America has some form of hpv.. Thats why the shot is so recommended. now Im sure your wondering why men dont get vaccinated then right? It would take 7 guys getting vaccinated to protect against only 1 woman (because so many more guys have it then girls) and thats why guys dont get it currently.
