I will not, ever, get the HPV vaccine. I personally think it was created for profit! It is the most expesive vaccine out there and it requires 3 shots (spaced out). It is very new and a lot of girls have had negative side effects. If you are low risk it's really not necessary.
When I was 18 and went to my first gyn appt. they REALLY pushed it on me, but I wasn't comfortable with and either was my mother (FWIW she's a nurse) I went to the same gyn for my next appt a year later and she pushed it on me again, despite me telling her I had NO interest. They sent me lot of mail with pamphlets supporting it. After I moved I switched gyns and my new doctor told me she personally wouldn't take it either or give it to her children.
I did a lot of research on the vaccine before deciding I didn't want it and I suggest you do the same. Apparently the vaccine is only proven to last 5 years, but they currently don't offer any boosters for it. They recommend girls get it at age 12. So basically it wears off by the time the girls are sexually active.
I wish I could find where I read that, but I can't.
I feel like there's a lot of scare tatics around this vaccine. And the commercials claiming it's a "cervical cancer vaccine" drive me nuts! It's NOT!
I decided to get it. After talking with a couple of doctors they thought it was definetly worthwhile. I believe that the benefits of vaccines outweight the risks so I didn't have concerns from that perspective. Also, luckily where I live you don't have to worry about doc's pushing meds on you for profit since they don't get compensation for that kind of thing (Canada).
At first when I found out that my benefits wouldn't cover it I hesitated. But I ended up deciding to call it an investment in my health so I justified spending the money. Here in BC the vaccine cost me $130 x 3 for anyone who might be wondering.
I've had my first two shots and will get number 3 in a few months.
I'm not getting it simply because I feel that it got pushed through way too quickly. I just figured that if I haven't gotten anything from having sex without the protection of a condom with my FI then I probably won't get it as it is. My mom wanted to vacc my little sis and I (and was going to force me to get it), but I managed to hit 18 and therefore not be covered by insurance before she could. I just don't like the idea of finding out that I'm infertile at 25 or whatever because of a vaccine that I don't feel that I need. And no, I don't feel the same about polio, smallpox, etc vaccines because the idea that your child gets autism from that is just plain ignorant.
I have had it and had no problems with it. In Australia we have free Medicare for everyone so I didn't have to worry about insurance, etc. and for women under 25 it was bulk-billed so there was no gap fee.
