My Lil fur baby’s first birthday is coming up (Doggie Lucy) and I wanted to have some treats with some close friends/family who also have dogs that play with Lucy.  Have all the Dogs at our dog park and hang out for a little while and we will get treats for all of the dogs.  I have heard mix reviews and I was wondering what you all have done or do.

We do have a cat and I cannot see myself throwing the cat a birthday.... just the dog. Is that weird?  I guess because I feel that cat dose not socialize with other cats he doesn’t get one.... What do you think?!

I don't because I usually forget, but I do like to pet them and say happy brithday when I remember!  They don't know why they are being pet, but they like attention.  I did when I was little however, throw my dog a birthday party...

I think it is a little weird personally, I think that  birthdays are people things not dog things.

I think it might be overkill.  We buy our puppy a special treat (a toy, bone, etc.) on his birthday, but that's it.

I know they don't understand it but I try to do something nice for my cats anyway. I don't schedule vet or grooming appts on that day, I sing them the birthday song and do an extra play session. I also commemerate the day my previous cat passed away, which incidentally happens to be Halloween :( I bypass the parties and costumes and just stay at home and remember him.

I usually celebrate my three cats birthdays which I guess (I adopted them w/o their actual birthdays known) with their favorite wet food and some treats!

We celebrate our kittys bday by getting him some treats and a few new toys. I dont know that I would ever throw a party but if you want to, go for it. It's certainly different!

@beekiss2: I also made up a birthday for our shelter baby. We celebrate the day we adopted her.

I like the idea of a little doggy birthday party with some treats and a play date with puppy friends!  But I've never done it.  We do get Daisy a special treat and we'll take her out to Petco or something (one year they sent us a coupon for a free birthday treat and we took her).  She was born at the shelter when her momma dog was dumped there, so they knew her birthday luckily!

We're totally doing a party for our baby - there are several bakeries around here that do doggie cakes and we'll get together with my boss and her dogs and let them have a silly play date with lots of treats.  We'll probably only do this for her first birthday, but still, I'm so happy to have her here that I'm going all out for the first one!

@meliss:  I guessed my babies' birthdays based on the estimated age the vet gave me when I took them to their first appointments then subtracted it.  I try to make it the 5th of the Month so it's easier for me to remember.  Cisco is cinco de mayo baby, Tux is August 5th (day after Fi's birthday), and Firefox is September 5th.

I confidentally say I would never throw a birthday party for an animal. Now, I am crazy in love with my cat and prance around on his birthday wishing him a "happy birthday", but there is no party/treats/presents involved. Wink

i have no idea how old my cats or my dog is-does that make me a bad "mom"?. I don't remember the day that we adopted them.  They were just kind of there.

Personally I think it's a silly thing to do and I would probably roll my eyes if one of my friends sent me an invite...but thats just me.

If I had a dog again I'd probaby give him a treat and maybe celebrate with my household, but I'm not sure I would involve other people...

We have a pup and we did a little birthday celebration!  I got him a birthday t-shirt to wear and we got him a few new toys and I made him some safe-for-dogs cupcakes.  We took pictures.  I probably would invite other people if we had other friends with dogs who lived nearby. But then again we are nuts! We don't have a cat now, but when I was a kid we had a cat and we would get her a special toy or treat on birthdays/christmas but we never had a party or would consider inviting anyone over.  Probably because dogs like to play but cats don't generally seek out other cats to play with, like you mentioned.  If you want to have a little celebration, do it!

I've given my pets special treats for their birthday (some I didn't know when they were), regardless if they were a dog or a cat. My little guy (black cat) has his first birthday today and he got a can of wet food, and the fact that he doesn't socialize with any other pets doesn't matter.

We actually had a legit first brithday party for our puppy Ellie last year. We invited her dog friends over and our family and friends and had a party with a doggie friendly cake and loot bags for her puppy friends. Everyone thought I was nuts till they came lol She even got really cute gifts.

My poodles turned 2 and 4 last week.  We had a party for her at the park with some friends of ours who have a dog too.  We had a little pick nick and we had so much fun.

Growing up, my mom always celebrated our dog's birthdays- just a treat for them.  She and my aunt will give presents to each other's dogs for Christmas or their birthdays.  We only have fish right now, so we haven't thought about this.  After we get a dog, I will either get the dog a treat, or not do anything.  FH will think I am crazy for doing anything birthday-related.

I wouldn't say that we throw our dog a birthday, but we definitely remember what day it is.  We give her extra treats and a new dog toy, but I wouldn't say that we "throw her a birthday party".  That would be hardcore....haha.

We celebrate our dogs b-day usually with a toy, I make a cake for us, and I usually get a special treat for her. It's usually the dog cookies glued together with peanut butter, completed with a full on singing of Happy Birthday. what do you want she's our child for the time being...

Of course I give my doggie a birthday. It's not a big deal -- it's not like we take the day off work or invite the neighbourhood dogs.  We take 10 mins out of our day to don party hats and give him some extra treats. Okay, fine, we sing "Happy Birthday" too. :P

I dont throw a party but I do get my dog a birthday gift... which is always food :).

This year I forgot her bday, Oct 6th. I have a birthday box that is full of (human) party supplies. On Hayley's bday, she got into that box. Its been there for months & she didnt touch it til then. On her bday this year, she threw her own party. Crate paper, plastic forks, spoons, knives, pixie sticks, & candles were spread all across the living room. She got a late gift cuz she got into trouble that day.

When I used to live near a dog park I would do a "birthday party" time thing for my dog.  I would put a pretty bandana on her and bring treats to give to the other dogs.  But I would always have treats and give them to the other dogs (if their owners were ok with it) because I was training her, so it wasn't that out of the norm.  Now we have 3 dogs and celebrating consists of presents and a special dinner.  I also have 2 cats and we're unsure of either of their birthdays but know that they were born sometime in the summer so they get a joint birthday that usually includes some new toys and tuna.

Our boys get a frosty paws (each) on either of their birthdays, along with a moving rendition of "happy birthday'" sung by me and FI and an extra long belly rub, and maybe a few extra snuggles that day. We have dachshunds, so the man of honor is allowed an extra-long sit in mommy's lap (a most coveted position) and if we think of it, the younger one will get a new toy. The older one likes toys but the younger one flips out at a new toy and would take it away from the older one. Ah siblings.

we usually get each of our pups treats from the bakery... they're bdays are only five days apart (1 year and 5 days), so we usually just combine them and spoil them for a day :P
