You don't need to go all matte, but if it is not matte, you would be safest using something that's made for photos. Make sure not to use spf! Spf reflects light, and makes your face appear lighter than it actually is. Some of the photo-specific stuff is good because it diffuses light and doesn't look chalky matte or super glitter reflective.
To get my skin ready, I used a clinique face wash, toner, and gel moisturizer twice a day, religiously. In about two weeks, I saw MAJOR differences in tone, texture and smoothness.
As far as makeup goes, I really liked the Smashbox primer, and the Makeup Forever HD foundation and HD finishing powder. Oh, and also Urban Decay's primer potion for eyes.
You can find all of that stuff at Sephora.
This bookcalled Makeup Makeovers is AWESOME and will teach you all the techniques you need to know. It has different looks with varying amounts of makeup from natural to dramatic and they are all for brides. It is VERY easy to follow along and I have permanently adopted some of his tips. He also has another book for everyday looks but this one is perfect for what you need.
There are also heaps of girls giving makeup tutorials on You Tube definately check them out.
Oh wow, I didn't even realize there was makeup designed for photos. Does it look really heavy or weird in real life?
Thanks for all the tips, guys. I will check out some youtube videos, too. I'd never even thought of that!
smashbox primer + makeup 4ever hd foundation and translucent powder = wonderful
The bees made a Sephora believer out of me. It's easy to apply and it stays put....and best of all for me... still look like me when it's done...only more polished =)

The fiance and are are having our engagement photos taken next month in NYC and I am in need of makeup advice. I only wear a bit of concealer and mascara on a daily basis, so I have no working knowledge of foundation, blush, etc...
I assume there are tricks getting your skin to look photo-ready. I feel like I've heard people say you don't want to use anything with light reflectors. Is this true? Is all matte the way to go? How come?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
