I would imagine that using a $60 dollar one from walmart would get good results as long as you have good lighting! My digital SLR works in pretty low light but I have an el cheapo one that takes great pictures in good light. Maybe use some spotlights in the area where you want the photobooth.
It really depends more so on what KIND of results your looking to get, and also mainly on the lighting. Photography is, by name, the capture of light. it's the most basic and crucial step... so with a cheap point and shoot if you set it up right and have good consistent lighting you can still have good consistent results.
It might be a good idea to rent a nice DSLR since you're worried about picture quality. Search DSLR rentals and remote rentals and rent for like 3-5 days, play with it a few days to make sure you can get good results! It's pretty inexpensive (about $80 for a lens and camera) and if you know someone with one, you might be able to convince them to let you use it!

I was wondering if anyone knows how good of a camera is needed for a DIY photobooth??
We just have a Kodak Easyshare cheap-o, but were looking into a nicer one as our Christmas gift this year. It has a timer of course, so I know it would work, but would it be enough?
Anyone have advice on this?
