Does anyone know an affordable photgrapher or videographer in the Maryland, DC, VA area? We keep coming across people that cost around 2K and that is wayyyy out of our budget.
Please post if you know anyone! <3

i had the same problem in the Montreal area 1500-2000 for a photographer. i stumbled unto a blog somewhere, (don’t remember where it was), which suggested looking for event photographers instead.HUGE difference in price! I found a photographer who would let me customize what I wanted, we booked 1hr for the ceremony and 2hr for a private shoot in a parc afterwards $390+tax. this was much more in my budget, and covers the parts of the day, I wouldn’t feel comfortable having an amateur cover. The reception pictures will be taken by guests and a family member.

Photography is expensive to produce. It will all really come down to how important quality is to you. I suggest looking for someone stating out who hasn’t really established their business, haven’t invested in great equipment, pay taxes, and doesn’t mind working crazy hours for next to nothing. Of course you will have to sacrifice quality, professionalism, and take the chance they don’t burn out and leave the biz before your big day. You might just get lucky and find a hidden gem. They are out there. I just want you to be realistic in what you are looking for.

I think a lot of us are in the same boat. 2k is about average…and actually sounds like it might be reasonable for your area. You may want to try the local colleges for a photography major looking to get their feet wet.
Mini Rant: I realize that photography is a business and like everyone else they are in business to make money but lets be real… some of these people can be more than a little unreasonable. I live in the south, south carolina exact and ive literally been qouted 5700 plus milage and per diem for a local photographer to travel 2 hours.

2000 is super affordable in the world of wedding photography.

@KateByDesign: 1500 for everything…
-8hrs, unlimited shots, at least 2 photographers or 1 photographer and an assistant who shoots as well, an album, rights to the pictures, and a DVD with them on it, also an online blog where my friends and family can view the pictures once edited.

@FtrMrsAMH: I’m using Rachel Naft / RMN Phtography based in Arlington. She’s fantastic. I know her basic packages fall in your price range, but to get the album and extra photographer will add extra expense. It might be worth reaching out to her, though, and trying to customize a package for your price range. Unfortunately in the DMV, you may have a tougher time getting all of your requirements at that budget. Good luck!

@FtrMrsAMH: Woah!!! To be perfectly honest, all of that won’t happen for $1,500.00 in this area. Especially with an album. Those things run around $800-$2,000 on TOP of photographer services day-of.
You may be able to get the rest for $1,500 from someone who doesn’t have much experience, but I don’t know of anyone around here. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!

For $1500 you should be able to find an experienced photographer for 3-5 hours of coverage with one shooter. You wont get all the extras just coverage and images for print. With all the things you listed you’ll have to go for a photographer with less experience. Most of us include a gallery to share after. And you can always get an album after as well..
You could always find a newbie/student looking to shoot for portfolio. Have them all day and a pro for limited/important hours. Just make sure if you go this route to check with the lead photographer to make sure its ok for the other shooter. Im personally ok with this as long as I have a heads up from my couple that they have another there. Some photographers will not allow it, they’ll have something in their contract about it.. this doesnt mean they wont be willing if you ask though.
I personally think some get too uppity having another shooter, I dont, I work with all the cameras not against. Tons of guests come with DSLRs and you just have to work with them, its the way it is today and they have to stop fighting it.. so a another shooter does not bother me at all.
