If he knew the travel regimen for the day prior to signing a contract, then yes, it’s inappropriate for him to ask for compensation now.

If, however, the travel requirements have been altered from a previous plan, then it’s not unreasonable for him to inquire about compensation.

Good luck!

What does your contract say? It’s not an unreasonable request – if it’s part of your contract. If not, then it’s not okay for him to add fees after the contract has been agreed upon.

yeah, the travel should be included in the original contract.  But it has to say it.  However, with gas prices increasing and that is a lot of travel, some vendors may wish to request that.  But, seriously, he should be able to afford his own gas considering what photographers make.

Exactly what Marissa said.

That is a lot of traveling on the day of the event. If this is a $50-100 gas charge then I say just pay it. The last thing you want is a slightly disgruntled photographer.

I think you should talk to him about the issue of the gas fees after the contract was signed. Who knows, he may retract his request or compromise by having you pay half instead. Either way, I think you should not do anything that could affect your relationship negatively because it may translate through your wedding pictures. Good luck!

sounds like you’ll have to ante up.  i haven’t went photog shopping yet but all the brochures i got from the bridal show mentioned travel  fees if outside of a certain mile radius.

we are paying gas & parking for our photog but it was mentioned before we signed a contract. i agree that altho photographers make a ton & should be able to pay for gas, that is quite a bit of travel. also you should probably pay it so he doesnt take it out on the photos!

As a wedding photographer, if there is excessive travel I include the fee in the contract. I don’t think it’s right for the fee to be slid in after you have a signed contract. That contract specifies what you’ve agreed to pay for what service, and he has to provide it now regardless. Sometimes photographers can have trouble with client relations like this. Good luck to you!
