So i wanted to get everyone's opinion on my current situation. My fiancee and i fell in love with two different photographers, both with very distinct styles. As a compromise, we decided to book one for the engagement and one for the wedding. We thought this was a good solution, but when i contacted one of the photographers about booking them for the engagement, they proceeded to ask questions asking why we didn't want to book them for the full wedding package. I was a bit thrown off by the question, because i thought since the option to just do an engagement session was part of the offering, I thought it was a totally reasonable ask and i felt strange needing to have a reason. Just was a little confused about the situation, and is wondering if it was a request that seemed rude in an inadvertant way, and whether i should look for another photographer instead.

I don't think it's rude of them to ask at all.  In fact, I completely understand why they would.  They presented you a proposal of their work and you accepted it, in part.  Generally couples use the same photographer for the engagement shoot and the wedding day because they've already been in front of this photographer and are more comfortable with someone they know.  So, I think it's fair that they ask you why you selected them for one, but not the other.  I'm sure the photographer was just confused about why you only wanted them for the engagement and not the wedding, especially since I'm assuming you had interviewed them about doing the wedding as well.  If you love this photographer, I wouldn't write them off over that one question!
