Ours is the same way, half up front, half the week of. I think that is fairly common practice.
Most of the photog's we researched were half up front, the rest due right before the wedding.
We actually had to pay the entire cost up front due to "special offer" pricing. Kinda hurt handing over the credit card, but it all worked out in the end.
I am paying her in full a year and a half in advance- we save $200 that way and since it's all in writing I feel comfortable doing so.
Thanks for your speedy input ladies! I'm glad this is normal practice - I'm must more comfortable signing everything now!
We only paid 20% to keep our date, we pay the rest 1 month before the wedding.
@marthanotstewart: If they are holding the date for you, they want a good commitment upfront. If it was only like $100 down, people would cancel them easily (if need be). They want you to stop photog shopping and commit with slim chance of backing out and losing money. : ) Business is business.
We put about 30% down as a deposit because our photographer broke up payments into deposit, wedding week, and when we picked photos up. So it seems pretty normal to me.
Ours was a 30% deposit, but his might be higher due to the fact that its a Destination Wedding.
We had 20% deposit, and 50% due 6 months before, and 75% due 3 months before (totals of all payments) The rest I think is due upon receipt of proofs?
We put down a third, with another third due 90 days out, and the last payment a week before.
This sounds pretty standard. 40-50% deposit when booking, the balance 2-4 weeks before the wedding.
We only put down $200 (which is 10%). The rest is due on the day of the wedding.

We just picked our photographer and had him write up a contract for our destination wedding. We are really happy with their services and how helpful they've been so far, but in the contract is states we need to pay half of the cost 6 months before the wedding, and the remainder within a week of the wedding. I feel like half up-front is a lot and am curious if this is common practice. Do most people pay the photographer before they receive any photos at all?
