I am using Joel Greenberg and Wendy Stewart - they have a lot of weddings at Battery Gardens, they are SO nice and great to work with, and I am sure they would have a package in that price range. I believe the website is www.wedphotos.com
Did you try asking Punam Bean? I asked her (a year ago) and her rates were ok. All I remember was her engagement session was $500 and free with a wedding package but I forgot what her package includes.
I love her style:)
Kimberly Salem is in your price range and really good and easy to work with. http://www.kimberlysalemblog.com/
Use mine!!! I got married two weeks ago at the Battery Gardens also. I will be happy to tell you everything you want to know about it :-). You are the Battery Garden bride right, or am I mistaken?
In any case, we used Gulnara
She is slightly higher than your budget (basic package begins at $4500) but she is worth EVERY CENT. I was, and am, in love with her. We knew we wanted genuine photographs that document the day. She's the best documentary photographer out there - you know she was nominated for a Pulitzer for her documentary work?). She captures the day so well - the happiness, the joy, the stolen exchanges. And I never even noticed she was there during the ceremony or reception. Ever. She made life look beautiful unscripted.
At the same time, we want our photos to look beautiful - you know? Every brides wants to look her best on her wedding day. Candid can't mean sloppy. She made me feel so comfortable I honestly believed I was the prettiest bride on the planet. Of course I now know it's not true :-), but at the time, I totally believed it. And the pictures reflected my and husband's confidence and joy.
Also my husband is a photography snob. His whole family has degrees in Fine Art (he's the black sheep non-art one but he still is particular about it) and so it was impossible for everyone to agree on photography. But everybody loves Gulnara's work. Everyone.
You seriously must check her out. She is as beautiful a person as she is a photographer. So much so that I want call her up and hang out again :-).
Here's one picture of us with the graffiti on the street of New York. It looks almost unreal but it was a very genuine moment. My bridesmaids were telling jokes about the wedding night, we laughed, and tada, picture. That was, in fact, not a pose, if you can believe it. Again, life is beautiful through her lens, unscripted.
I cannot recommend our wedding photographer highly enough! Check him out at michaelsimonweddings.com (and on weddingwire, where he has perfect reviews). He fits in your budget and is the nicest guy! PM me if you want to discuss more. (He did color and black and white, but I like these two B&W a lot.)
Woops it would only let me upload the one. Well, let me know if you want to see more.
Dante Williams is amazing and in that price range!!!!!!! www.dantewilliams.com

Just wanted to give a quick update--we are using Joel Greenberg and we are so excited about it! Thanks for all your suggestions. @ Ms. Hermit Crab, thanks for the reco, we love Joel!
I understand @salsals found a photographer, but in case anyone else looks at this thread wanting recs, we used Alex Z. Photography for our wedding. Alex is AMAZING, she is very affordable, lovely, and does AMAZING photojournalist work.
My friend used Sasha Chou. She is talented and funny. She can fit in your price range.
Why dont you try searching for a few online and check out their portfolio? Wedding is a memorable event and everyone wants to keep the memories fresh. A bad photographer may spoil everything. So, search for a few, speak to them, get a quote and also check out their portfolio. This way you'll make an informed decision. Hope this helps.

Hi hive, I really don't know where to start when it comes to photography. For some reason, none of my married friends were particularly in love with their wedding photographers, so this seems to be the one wedding-planning area where I really don't have any recommendations to start from. We're getting married in NYC(Battery Gardens) and we'd like to keep it around $4,000 all-in for photography. I'm sure that's on the low end for NYC, but hopefully not impossible. So, if anyone has any recommendations of Manhattan-area photographers around that price range, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks for the help!!!
