I have a true and almost obsessive love affair with Fola Adewole.  I saw her classifieds here and think she is just awesome!  I have love affairs with other photographers, but I just keep on coming back to her over and over... this is her latest wedding.... i have never been so upset to live so far south in my life!!! you up nawth ladies are lucky.... it will never be in my budget to fly a photographer in and house them etc.... sigh.....

I can see why!  I just gave in to my lust.  Photography was more expensive than everything else for us... but I just closed my eyes, took a deep breath and did it.  No regrets.  I'll probably never splurge on anything else like that in my life, but it was fully worth it!

@mrs. dg it's soo hard because i have soo many friendors, but i would LOVE to have fola there... and her prices are reasonable (of course i had to email for ummm research)... sometimes she has specials if she's going to more exotic places and new orleans is pretty exotic, you know?!

    Wow, just gorgeous!

I had a serious obsession with a photog (I can't remember his name right now!) but as soon as I contacted him for info.....the magic was gone.  Correspondence with him was totally sluggish and he came across as one of those sort of slimy vendors who just look at you as another dumb bride they can upsell everything to.

So it's good in a way that you can't bring yourself to splurge THAT much....because then you can still dream Wink

omg @noelle-a-belle: unfortunately she's just as sweet via email as she is in real life!! she's just a really funny sweet person!! i swear i would buy a cheaper dress if i could have her take my pictures and diy til i die!! lol!!! seriously i have never wanted anything in my life more (besides M) and I know he'd think it was completely extravagant for us to fly her in to take the pictures... it may end up like that episode of whose wedding is it anyway where that nutty bride flew sam in and then was like obsessed with her lol!!!

seriously though, that's why people diy, to get things they wouldn't be able to afford other wise, right?

I'm obsessed with my photographer.  She was the first major thing we booked after the venue, and also the most expensive component of the wedding.  The more I see of her work (and see other photographers' work), I know we made the right decision.

crebre: if you can save enough $ by DIY-ing, go for it.  We saved a lot of $ DIY-ing (not because we wanted to splurge on a photog, but because we don't make a lot of $ lol) and it was actually really fun!  You might be surprised.

Like you said though, hopefully something good will happen in your future and it'll give you the extra cash you need for your dream photog!  Here's hoping.

I've done weddings all across the US.... it honestly isn't usually that much to fly.  If her rates are reasonable do it.  There's a lot of ways to save money too... even something small like taking one flower out of your centerpiece.  Everything else is going to be done with and gone after you wedding... all you'll have are the images.... go with your heart... it will be so worth it!

@onada: how cool is it that you know her, she seems so sweet in person and we've chatted back and forth on facebook and via email for a few of my clients...

@klp: yeah i know but i am the mocha frugalista after all, but for me bar none photography is the most important thing.  i definitely don't dig paying all this money for one day (even if it's 3,000, that's still 3,000 for one day!) when you have subpar pictures. i want my pictures to reflect who i am as a person and to make me feel like i am there and 50 years later when the grands are looking at the pictures they'll feel as if they are there with grandma and granddad when they got married.

i know that m on the other hand will think otherwise because well he seems to think i'm an amazing guru that can save the world lol, very flattering but ummm i'd rather have a 200.00 dress than a subpar photographer...  this truly stresses me out, isn't that the most insane thing in the world?! i'm not engaged yet and completely stressed out over the details?! it's why i want a short engagement because believe me when i tell you i am crazy.  and let's not even start with makeup artists!!!

oops @noelle: we make a decent amount, but all of our cash is tied up in our business endeavors so we're trying to be frugal with everything that we do... i hope that with a decent tax return and perhaps a bunch of diy'g i could make something work.  btw, i'm not engaged yet so i couldn't even call and question her rates, if she's booked etc. it will be just my luck that i will save all of this money and figure her out in my budget and BAM! she's booked...

@honeybear: i'm addicted i swear to you!! lol!!! and it's soo hard if you're a darker skinned black person to find photographers who don't make you look "shiny" for lack of a better word. i don't know how to explain it but i swear in every picture that i have seen of hers it's like you are right there with them.... sigh...c'est la vie.

I think that photography is VERY important! If you are only going to splurge on one thing for your wedding I would say photography. It is the only thing you can keep with you forever! I have never talked to one person who spent a lot on nice photos that regretted it, yet I have seen a lot of people who skimped on photography and strongly regret it afterwards. you can never get that day back,  make sure you pick the photographer you love! My fiance and I are definitly using a photographer that we splurged on.

@july: yeah i know i say the same thing all the time, photography is the most important thing blah blah blah blah.. but i have special circumstances with my job and it's very difficult to not use someone locally or a friendor without stepping on toes.. i may have to figure this one out.. i think that i'll go to trials on my fave makeup artists and then just post a blind poll and let the bees vote on which they like the best...

I am usually in love with most of the photographs featured on Style Me Pretty - maybe the weddings they post have a similar photography-style, despite different photographers? I'm lucky because my brother is a photographer, and he's going to take our pics for free. :)

@jduck: lol!! that definitely helps!! i'm luckily able to do my own centerpieces, bouquets, etc and will get my linens, lighting, etc for little of nothing; however i want a photographer and a great videographer, or even a decent videographer and i KNOW m will veto these expenses...

he may be better because he says the other day "you know we can't afford for you to spend 6500 on a couture dress, right?:

me: um i know, but what's a good amount

    him: you tell me

    me: you tell me

    him: you tell me

and finally i was like well never mind lol!! i honestly would give up the la sposa that i lust over for a david's bridal almost look alike in order to get a great photographer, i mean that saves what like 500 right there? and i could care less about a limo, etc because everything is in the same place. i don't know if that's important to m though, it may be...

Diva - I LOVE LOVE LOVE how you said "i want my pictures to reflect who i am as a person and to make me feel like i am there and 50 years later when the grands are looking at the pictures they'll feel as if they are there with grandma and granddad when they got married."

YOU HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON!  This is what I actually strive for and tell all my clients. My main goal is to get YOU in the picture.  I don't want people to see another beautiful bride, I want them to see, you, "DIVA" in that picture and know who you are.

That made me all warm to hear you say that.... I think people a lot of times think they take bad photos because they've never truly had a photo... of THEM.

Cre- I have photog lust too. Over this couple photog team:

    http://www.sedonabride.com

They had emailed me and said they could not work within my budget seeing as I'm getting married on a Sat. in May, but this morning I got an email and they said they are going to talk it over and see if there's a way to work it out. Cross your fingers for me!

I checked out Fola's site. Great work. She really capture's the vibe!

You have nooooooo idea. I'm in LOVE with a photographer that works in our area. Seriously, if he gave me a proposal for $8g's I might have to think about it - he's not that $$ of course. He's got reasonable prices, and he responded to my email the same day - awesome.

He's booked the day of our wedding and so is his associate that covers for him when he's booked - so basically I'm S.O.L.  But any NY-area girls should def. check out his work - uh.maze.ing

    http://www.rickyrestiano.com/blog.html

I might hire him after the wedding to take "wear it again" pics around the city (um… if we have any cash left - LOL).

ohhhh yes! i loveeeeeeeee a metro detroit photographer, but i didn't even bother asking her to come to our wedding on the cruise because i know it'd beout of our budget. maybe when we have our reception i will see if we can get her back here. almost everyone i know that i graduated from high school with uses her and i'm just wayyyyyy to jealous.

I love anything from Max Wanger. If anyone here reads or looks at Glamour magazine, one of the writers used him for her wedding. The shots are spectacular. I'm sure he charges an arm and a leg, but the filters, angles, and creative shots he uses are amazing! http://www.maxwangerblog.com/

Well, I have to say, there's one photographer who's work I'm just amazed by. His post processing techniques are one reason he stands out. Absolutely artistic. The angles and perspectives he captures are also breath taking. http://www.mclellanstyle.com/

My favorite couple's gallery on his site is "Andrea & Richard in Riviera, MX."

Many of his photos have a very artistically perfect texture to them. It's amazing work.  I aspire to that greatness!
