I"ve heard great things about Erik Ekroth and 4 Eyes, but don't have any personal experience with any of them--sorry! :( From what I've seen Sarah Merians and Greenberg/Stewart look less like photojournalistic style. Again, no personal experiences, this is just my opinion after checking out their blogs/websites during my own photog search. Good luck!
My wedding isn't until Sept 2010. But I booked Cly Creation, which several of my fiance's friends, have used and comes highly recommended. Check out their blog and website. =)
i haven't heard of those photographers, but we did use ananda lima for our engagement pics, and really liked her. good luck!
For some other suggestions (or some other blogs to drool over!), check out Agaton Strom (super nice and VERY highly recommended by like a bajillion people http://www.agatonstrom.com/ ), Aga Images ( http://www.agaimages.com/ ) , and Patricia Kantzos (who we're using :) www.kantzos.com)
I've seen lots of Sarah Merians and she's recommended by a lot of venues. My opinion, and I considered her, her work is just okay for the price that she charges.
Joel Greenberg is quite good - also pricey, especially if you want him to shoot for you and also want another photographer. If that isn't a concern, try him out.
Loved, loved, Agaton Strom, but he was just a bit more than I wanted to spend. So with that said, I'll recommend my photographer, who I'd classify as fairly similar to Agaton Strom but for a lot less - Bill Walsh of Stellaview Studios (based out of NJ but travels throughout the NYC/NJ/PA area).
Good luck.
Sarah Edwards is a photographer based out of CT (but she can certainly travel to NY) who shoots in the photojournalistic style. Her website is www.edwardsphotodesign.com. She takes amazing photos and is reasonably priced. I used her for my engagement photos and she'll be taking photos at my wedding. I highly recommend her!
Hey there! I'm in LOVE with my photographer. He's amazing and just an awesome guy too. He's Danny Weiss (dannyweissphoto.com). We just got our engagement photos back and loved them and a couple of friends used him too and were really pleased. Can't recommend him enough.
Other great ones to look into are angelica glass, christian oth studios, 5 west studios and brian dorsey. We spent forever looking for the photographer b/c it was so important to us and those were our top pics.
@ monamiestephanie I have a number of friends who used Wendy & Joel Greenberg and I agree they're really good. I actually have 2 sep. friends who are featured couples on the website, if you want to PM me and I'll send you the links. They were a little too expensive for our budget though so I didn't go with them.
Lina Jang is UH-mazing! FI and I met with her a couple weeks ago. I really like that if you hire her, you get her & an assistant for the whole day (not 8hrs and $X per additional hr like most others) AAAAND she touches up every.single.picture that she takes which is unheard of. She's a little pricey too but she does have 2 other photographers who work with her at a cheaper rate.
I'm completely obsessed with Ricky Restiano 's work but he was booked for our date. I might book a session with him after the wedding to get shots around the city of just FI & I.
I don't have personal experience with Lina Jang, but she shot my cousin's wedding, and the pictures were beautiful! I'm using Erica Lyn - we liked her style and got along well with her - important for a photog!
In the spirit of full disclosure, I work with my husband who is a wedding photographer in NYC (Joshua Zuckerman -www.jzweddings.com). Chosing a photographer is not easy, but there are tons of great photographers out there. A few things to consider are:
1. Big studio vs. boutique studio
2. Photographer's responsiveness both before AND after the wedding
3. Photographer input on album edits
The advantage to going with a boutique studio, is that the photographer who shoots your wedding will be hands on for the whole process. This means, they are there for the initial meeting, do the pre-wedding prep to go over shot lists, etc., process the images and then work with you on the album. When you work with one person, they will get to know you and be able to provide the images and the album edit that is important to you.
I saw a post here where the bride, while she liked her wedding photos, was disappointed that the photographer didn't capture more details that she had worked so hard on. Good communication between you and the photographer is key.
A couple of other things to consider, is how service oriented or responsive a photographer seems. You'll want your photographer to be available to answer any questions, or fulfill a request, both before AND after your wedding. Find out from past couples how responsive a photographer was. And, does the photographer help you edit your album. Editing is an art, and can be very time consuming. Some photographers are very talented at editing, which is what makes an album look amazing.
Hope this is helpful.
We're working with Kate Murphy and couldn't be happier. She's extremely responsive, reasonably priced and actually trained as a photojournalist before switching to weddings.
I'm notoriously camera-shy, but she made our engagement photo process painless and seeing the photos made me really happy that we decided to have a wedding rather than elope. She's also bee featured on OnceWed and (I think, StyleMePretty).
@SaraAileen20... i think their pricing is about $2500 and above depending on what package you sign up for.
I had a friend that used Jayd Garndina last year - He recommended her to me - He says she was great and very outgoing and great to work with.
Hi all -
We have booked Steve Worth Photography for our big day. He and his wife Kira(also a photographer) shoot the WHOLE day, start to finish and provide unlimited proofs and a DVD with all of the shots. They are very reasonably priced, I think, for everything they provide.
Okay...just took a look at Lina Jang and her photos are pretty, but I was caught off guard by all of a sudden running into a bunch of photos of topless brides with just their garters and panties on? Not what you usually run into when looking through wedding photogrpaher portfolios. Not something I'd want published on the internet either: dabbling in softcore internet porn on your wedding day? Ick. I'm not a prude AT ALL, and think these are very sensual and might be hot to give to your husband later, but putting them on your portfolio for the whole internets, including friends and family, to see is a bit off-color to me...
@veganglam you must've been on Lina Jang's boudoir website then... as the regular wedding photography one isn't like that.. i only know b/c I considered her as a wedding photographer as well as for my boudoir shots.... and the boudoir ones are all of models that released their pictures to be posted online.
MehBee: nope, they were nestled right in the middle of all the "Preparation" photos on her website. Like of the bride before he put her clothes on right before the ceremony. I'm sure they gave her permission to release the photos, and I think her work is beautiful, it just weirded me out a little to see topless brides getting ready to walk down the aisle, I've never encountered that in a photographer's wedding portfolio before.
I know the original question was a month ago, so maybe you chose your photographer? I am in love with 4 Eyes and would highly recommend their work. I didn't end up hiring them because they were out of my price range (all in was $8000+ if you include the extra hours, albums, and engagement shoot I was looking for), and hired Alex Z Photography instead, who was about half as much money and whom I loved as well.
Not sure why every venue recommends Sarah Merians, but if you're looking for photojournalist, she isn't the best fit.
And of course I had to check out Lina Jang & saw the scandelous photos - WEIRD!! reason enough for me not to hire her....
GOOD LUCK!
@futuremrscrawford... i hired Alex Z as well!!!! I loved her albums and her contagious energy... !
we used Yun Gen Yang (yangphoto) we're in his 2008 portfolio as Tass and Ken. We loved Yun and we had so many great pictures. If you have any questions please feel free to PM me and I'll try my best to answer every question :)
My advice to anyone trying to choose a photographer is to first make sure you enjoy their personal style, and their photographs (not a studio's photographs).
And second, make sure that you meet several photographers to see how they make you FEEL!
You should feel comfortable and confident in your choice once you meet them in person!
It is a daunting task to sort through the masses, but ultimately you need to trust you initial instincts, respect your budget, and go with your gut!
After meeting with numerous photographers, we ultimately went with Joel Greenberg & Wendy Stewart Photography! They provide 2 photographers on the day of, so you get both a traditional and photojournalistic approach, include an engagement session on the streets of lower Manhattan, which is perfect for us since it's where I was born and raised and is my favorite part of NYC, and have had vast experience at my venue. Most importantly, they're photos are beautiful...
Thanks for all the help, everyone! Great responses!
In case anything falls through, Jayd Gardina did my wedding in Manhattan Beach, CA in Jan, and was FANTASTIC. If she's still avail/you need anything else shot, definitely check her out. Seriously, her photos were unbelievable and she was such a fun personality, as well. I'd book her a million times over.
I liked Lina Jangs work also but she starts at $5000 which was above what I wanted to spend. I wound up booking Cly Creation.
Hi, I am still available on your wedding day. We also have wedding cinematography service.
