What about Craigslist? Some bees have also applied for awesome free photography packages amazingly talented photographers post about on their blogs -- and won!
Actually, most of the pricey photographers are people I have found on Craigslist.
Winning free photography would be awesome. =D Do you know where I could apply for that?
The only photog that I know of in the Virginia area is http://www.shillidayphotography.com/, but I don't know if she would travel to W. Virginia. Never know if you don't ask though.
I doubt she would travel here, considering I live in the very Northern region of West Virginia. There are plenty of photographers here, they're just expensive. We have about a $3000 budget for everything and we don't want to waste it all on a few pretty pictures, you know?
I really do appreciate the help, but she's way out of my budget.
I would recommend asking a photography professor to ask his or her favorite students. That way you know you'll be getting someone who will be responsible AND talented.
You probably won't have much luck until the Fall when school starts again, but since your wedding isn't until 10/10 you should be OK.
I'm actually on my senior year, so I'll just go talk to the professors when I go back to school this Fall.
Thanks!
That's what I did. The pros were just way out of our budget unfortunatley and I spoke to one who recommended contacting the schools for a student. I emailed the photo/art professor and explained my situation. A student emailed me a few days later and we met with him, looked over some work he's done(not many weddings, but great pics). We're paying $200 for 4 hours and all our proofs.
3000 is a good budget....that would cover our packages and travel costs for sure! hehe
Did you mean $3,000 for photography, or $3,000 for your entire ceremony?
If the latter, you will need to most likely find someone either willing to work building a portfolio, or a student.
That being said, I do have a contact in that area who may be interested and is working on building a wedding portfolio.
Pretty sure she meant $3000 for the entire wedding so can't spend most of it on the photographer! I think you have a great plan with asking the professors!
My wonderful engagement photographer wrote a blog post about what to do if you can't hire a pro photographer, it has some good tips!

Some professional photographers, especially the "big cheeses" as I call them may be able to recommend a lower price photographer to you. Most big photographers have second shooters available, who may be able to give you a much lower price.
lonely, i think the student route could work if you're desperate to save in this area. But I would definitely talk to the photography professors to find out who his most promising students are to narrow down your seach. They should have portfolios already as well, so i would be sure to ask to see those to help with a final decision.
P.S. The more I think about it, I think you should start not just with the Art department of any college, but an ART COLLEGE. You'll know by the name... they usually end in Art institute.
Wow, I've been so busy that I completely forgot about this. Actually, we found someone who's willing to do everything very cheaply ($45 for engagement pictures, plus gas). However, if we don't like the engagement pictures, we're out. Also, Zach found him in CraigsList, which scares me (only because the only two times I used it I got scammed, though not too badly). So!
Thank you all for your help! And, yes, I meant $3000 for the whole wedding (including reception - we're not decorating the church, since we'll only be there for about twenty minutes and, honestly, we don't give a damn), though it has been raised to about $5000 thanks to pushing the date back to something more fun!
EngagedToPanda, I don't know if there are any art institutes in my area, but I will check.
AleksiPhotography, would you mind sending me the contact information for this person in my area? And if s/he has a website, I would also like to see it. I'll check him out and see what Zach thinks.
Again, I appreciate everyone's help.

Wow, I've needed so much help since I joined this site a week ago.
My fiance and I have not gotten our engagement pictures done yet and we're finding engagement/wedding photographers to be a little pricey (we're on a VERY strict budget). One thought that has crossed our minds is to go to the art department at a nearby college and ask an older photography major to take the pictures for us, for which we would pay them (but much less than a professional). I figure it would be a win-win situation, since we would pay less and the student would have something to put in his/her portfolio (and what college student would turn down a little cash?). We're not sure how to go about doing it, though. Should I talk to a professor and ask them or should I post a flyer or what?
Has anyone else done this?
